As of 13 August 2026, AI can answer job application questions.
Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

What the alternative costsA purpose-built alternative is Teal, an AI job-search workspace for CV tailoring and application tracking.
If this goes wrong: the answer sounds generic or overclaims your experience, and you lose the chance to make a strong impression in that application.
What to actually do
Use a tool built for this
The route this page recommends
Do it yourself
Second choiceA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the employer's application page and copy the exact questions, instructions and word limits into a document.
- Copy the relevant job description and essential criteria, including any stated values or behaviours, into the same document.
- Gather your CV and three or four real examples from work, study, volunteering or personal projects, noting what happened, what you did and the result.
- Paste the prompt, job information, CV and examples into a chatbot, then paste the exact application questions where indicated.
- Compare each drafted answer with your CV, records and memories, replacing every [NEEDS MY EXAMPLE] marker and deleting any claim you cannot defend in an interview.
- Read each answer against the employer's criteria and word limit, then paste only the checked answers into the application form and keep a copy of what you submitted.
Prompt
Answer the job application questions below using only the information I provide. Do not invent achievements, responsibilities, qualifications, dates, employers, results or motivations. If the evidence is missing, write [NEEDS MY EXAMPLE] rather than guessing. Job title and employer: [JOB TITLE AND EMPLOYER] Job description or essential criteria: [PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION] My CV or factual background: [PASTE CV OR BACKGROUND] My relevant examples, written in rough notes: [PASTE EXAMPLES, INCLUDING THE SITUATION, WHAT I DID AND THE RESULT] Application questions: [PASTE QUESTIONS] For each question, draft a direct answer in plain British English. Match the evidence to the wording of the question and the job criteria. Use specific actions and results where I have supplied them. Do not repeat the same example unless it is clearly the best evidence. Keep within the stated word limit, or use 250 words if no limit is given. After each answer, add a short list of the factual claims I must check against my own records. Do not add introductory commentary, invented strengths or generic claims about the employer.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
Hand it to a person
The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know which experience best represents you when several examples could answer the question.
- AI cannot supply a genuine reason for wanting a particular employer unless you provide one.
- AI turns thin evidence into polished wording, which can make an ordinary example sound stronger than it is.
- AI cannot reliably judge whether the final answer sounds like your speaking voice or is specific enough for that employer.
- AI does not carry responsibility for inaccurate claims in the application or for answers you cannot defend at interview.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: taste, judgement under ambiguity and context depth.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 9 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT answer job application questions for me?
- Yes, it can draft answers from your CV, examples and the job description. You must check every factual claim and make sure the wording sounds like something you could explain at interview.
- Can AI write answers to competency questions?
- Yes. Give it a real situation, your actions and the result, then ask it to organise that evidence around the competency and the stated word limit. It cannot create a credible example if you have not supplied one.
- Is it safe to use AI for a job application?
- It is reasonably safe for drafting when you remove unnecessary personal information and check every answer against your own history. Do not submit invented achievements, copied claims or wording you could not defend in an interview.
- Will employers know if AI wrote my application answers?
- They may notice generic wording, repeated phrases or answers that do not match how you speak. Use AI to structure your real evidence, then rewrite the final version so it is accurate, specific and recognisably yours.
