As of 13 August 2026, AI can blur faces in a photo before sharing it.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

If this goes wrong: an unblurred face is shared and the person loses control over where their image appears.

How to actually do it
- Make a copy of the original photo and keep the original private and unchanged.
- Open Picsart or an AI image editor, or open a chatbot that accepts image uploads, and upload only the copy.
- Paste the prompt and ask it to blur every human face, including background faces, reflections and partially hidden faces.
- Open the returned image at full size and compare it with the original, checking the foreground, background, reflections, windows and screens for any recognisable face.
- If any face remains recognisable, mark its location and run the edit again with that location named, then repeat the full-size check.
- Export the checked edited copy and share that file instead of the original.
Prompt
Edit the attached photo so that every human face is strongly blurred or pixelated and no person can be recognised from facial features. Include faces in the background, reflections, screens and partially hidden areas. Do not alter anything else in the image. Return the edited image as a separate file and tell me if any face or identifying detail may still be recognisable. I will inspect the result before sharing it.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
What it gets wrong
- AI can miss a small, turned-away or partly hidden face, so automatic detection is not proof that every face was covered.
- AI cannot decide whether a person is still identifiable from clothing, tattoos, reflections, location clues or other details around the face.
- AI cannot obtain consent from the people shown or decide whether sharing the photograph is appropriate.
- A blur can be too weak if the image is enlarged or processed later, so the final exported file still needs your inspection.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: consent and privacy and verification cost.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT blur faces in a photo?
- Yes, if the version you are using accepts image uploads and image editing, it can produce an edited copy with faces blurred or pixelated. Check the whole image yourself because it can miss small or partly hidden faces.
- Is it safe to upload a photo to an AI face blurring tool?
- It depends on the tool's handling of uploaded images and on the sensitivity of the photograph. Do not upload a private image to a service whose storage or deletion terms you have not checked, and keep the original out of the shared file.
- How do I blur someone's face before posting a photo?
- Use an image editor with a blur or pixelation tool, or ask an AI editor to cover every face, including faces in the background and reflections. View the exported image at full size before posting it and share only the edited copy.
- Can a blurred face still be identified?
- Yes. A weak blur, a small face, or surrounding clues such as clothing, tattoos and reflections can still identify someone. Use strong blur or pixelation and remove or crop other identifying details where necessary.
