As of 13 August 2026, AI can build a language vocabulary list.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

What the alternative costsA purpose-built alternative is StudyFetch, which turns course materials into AI flashcards, quizzes and a tutor.
If this goes wrong: you memorise an unsuitable or inaccurate word and need to replace it after checking the list.

Do it yourself
The route this page recommends
A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Choose the target language, your approximate level, a practical topic and the regional variety you want, such as European Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese.
- Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and replace every bracketed slot with your details.
- Ask the chatbot to regenerate any entry that is too advanced, irrelevant, formal or unnatural for your intended situation.
- Open a reputable dictionary or language reference and check every translation, spelling, gender, plural form and pronunciation entry that you plan to learn.
- Paste the checked table into a notes app or flashcard system, then use the five recall questions and add any corrections before studying it.
Prompt
Build a language vocabulary list for me. Target language: [LANGUAGE] My current level: [LEVEL OR BEGINNER] My first language: [LANGUAGE] Topic or situation: [TOPIC] Number of entries: [NUMBER] Preferred variety or region, if relevant: [VARIETY OR NONE] Return a table with these columns: 1. Target-language word or phrase 2. Natural English meaning 3. Part of speech 4. Gender and plural form where relevant 5. One natural example sentence in the target language 6. English translation of the example sentence 7. Simple pronunciation guide 8. A short note about register, ambiguity or common usage where useful Use vocabulary suitable for my stated level and topic. Prefer common, useful words and phrases over obscure ones. Do not invent words, meanings, gender, plural forms or pronunciation. Flag any entry that varies by region or depends on context. Keep the example sentences natural and grammatically correct. Finish with five short recall questions using the list, but do not show the answers until I ask.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- It cannot know which words you will actually need unless you provide a clear situation, level and regional preference.
- It can present a plausible but wrong translation, gender, plural form or pronunciation.
- It cannot reliably judge whether an example sentence sounds natural in every region or social setting.
- It does not replace repeated exposure, listening practice and speaking with people who use the language.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: context depth and judgement under ambiguity.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT make a vocabulary list for me?
- Yes. Give it the language, your level, a topic and the number of entries, then ask for translations, examples, pronunciation and usage notes in a table. Check the entries before memorising them because fluent-looking mistakes can appear.
- How do I ask AI for a good language vocabulary list?
- Tell it your first language, target language, level, topic and preferred regional variety. Ask for common words, natural example sentences, grammatical details and warnings about regional or contextual differences.
- Can AI make vocabulary flashcards?
- Yes. It can turn a checked word list into cards with the target word on one side and the meaning, example and pronunciation on the other. StudyFetch is a purpose-built option that turns course materials into AI flashcards, quizzes and a tutor.
- Can I trust an AI-generated vocabulary list?
- Use it as a draft, not as an unchecked reference. Compare important entries with a reputable dictionary or language-learning source, especially gender, irregular plurals, pronunciation, slang and regional usage.
