As of 13 August 2026, AI can compare your bank balance with your accounting ledger.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

What the alternative costsA purpose-built alternative is Julius AI, listed as an AI data analyst for uploaded spreadsheets; no service price is provided here.
If this goes wrong: a transaction is wrongly matched or omitted, and the error carries into your management accounts, VAT records or other bookkeeping.

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

The distant thirdA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open your bank's online banking service and export the relevant account statement for the same period covered by the ledger, preferably as CSV or spreadsheet, without editing the downloaded file.
- Open your accounting system and export the ledger or bank account transaction list for that account and period, including dates, references, debit or credit amounts and running balances where available.
- Check that both files cover the same account, currency and date range, then remove unrelated tabs and redact personal information that is not needed for the comparison.
- Open an AI chat or Julius AI, paste the prompt, and upload both original exports with clear filenames such as bank-statement and accounting-ledger.
- Check the reported opening and closing balances against the bank statement and ledger totals, then inspect every unmatched, duplicate or suspicious transaction against the source rows.
- Resolve timing differences and corrections in your accounting system only after you have established what each item represents, and send unresolved or material differences to your bookkeeper or accountant.
Prompt
Compare the attached bank statement export with the attached accounting ledger export for the same account and period. Treat the bank statement as the source of the bank balance and do not change either file. First state the opening balance, closing balance and transaction count shown in each file. Then match transactions using amount, date, reference and likely timing differences, allowing for dates to differ slightly where that is clearly explained. Produce: 1) matched transactions, 2) bank transactions with no ledger match, 3) ledger entries with no bank match, 4) duplicate or suspicious entries, 5) arithmetic or balance inconsistencies, and 6) a proposed reconciliation summary. Show the exact row or transaction reference for every finding. Do not invent missing data, assume that an unmatched item is an error, or post any adjustment. Mark each conclusion as either supported by the files or requiring human judgement. If the files use different date formats, currencies or signs for credits and debits, state the interpretation before analysing them. Ask me for clarification if either file is incomplete or the period and account do not match.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know whether an unmatched payment is a genuine timing difference, a missing entry, a bank charge or a personal transaction without your explanation.
- AI can misread debit and credit signs, date formats, currencies or duplicated rows unless the files make them explicit.
- AI does not safely decide which correcting journal, VAT treatment or account code should be posted.
- AI does not take responsibility for the accuracy of your accounts or any later HMRC submission.
- The final reconciliation still needs your approval, and serious or recurring discrepancies need a bookkeeper or accountant.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: verification cost, judgement under ambiguity and stakes of error.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 9 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT reconcile my bank account with my accounts?
- Yes, it can compare bank and ledger exports, match likely transactions and list exceptions. It cannot reliably decide why every exception exists or which accounting adjustment to post, so you must check the evidence and approve the result.
- What files do I need to reconcile my bank account with AI?
- Use a bank statement export and the matching ledger or bank account transaction export from your accounting system. Include dates, references, debit or credit amounts and balances where available, and make sure both files cover the same account and period.
- Can AI find errors in my bookkeeping?
- It can flag missing matches, duplicates, inconsistent balances and transactions that look unusual. A flag is not proof of an error, because timing differences and legitimate adjustments need context from you or a bookkeeper.
- Is it safe to use AI for bank reconciliation?
- It is suitable for a first comparison if you use redacted exports and do not let it post changes automatically. This is not professional advice, and a bookkeeper or accountant should handle material discrepancies or records that feed VAT returns or other HMRC filings.
