As of 13 August 2026, AI can create a structured interview scorecard.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

If this goes wrong: interviewers apply unclear or irrelevant criteria inconsistently, and the organisation may make a poor or unfair hiring decision.

How to actually do it
- Open the current job description and paste it into a working document, removing confidential candidate information and any requirements that are not part of the approved role.
- Gather the hiring manager's approved essential criteria, desirable criteria, interview length, interview stage and existing questions in the same document.
- Paste the collected material into the prompt and replace every bracketed slot with the role-specific information, writing "none" where no approved questions exist.
- Ask the chatbot to produce the scorecard, then copy the proposed competencies, questions, rating anchors and calculation method into your interview template.
- Compare every criterion and question with the approved job description, remove anything the role does not require, and ask HR to check ambiguous criteria, weighting and reasonable-adjustment wording.
- Run the scorecard against a fictional or previously completed interview, checking that two interviewers could reach ratings from the recorded evidence rather than from general impressions, then send the approved version to every interviewer before interviews begin.
Prompt
Create a structured interview scorecard for the UK role described below. Role and context: [PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION] Interview stage: [DESCRIBE THE STAGE AND LENGTH] Approved competencies and essential criteria: [LIST THEM] Interview questions already agreed: [PASTE THEM OR WRITE NONE] Create a practical scorecard for interviewers. Include: 1. Each competency or criterion being assessed. 2. One or more interview questions linked to each criterion. Keep questions job-related and avoid asking for protected characteristics or irrelevant personal information. 3. What strong, acceptable and weak evidence would look like for each criterion. Describe observable evidence, not personality labels. 4. A consistent rating scale from 1 to 5 with plain anchors, where 1 means insufficient evidence and 5 means exceptional evidence relevant to this role. 5. A notes field for evidence and a separate rating field for each criterion. 6. A clear method for reaching an overall result without allowing one vague impression to override the recorded evidence. 7. Any criteria, questions or weighting that appear irrelevant, duplicative, ambiguous or likely to create inconsistent treatment. Explain the concern and propose a neutral revision. 8. A short interviewer instruction section covering asking the same core questions, recording evidence before rating, handling reasonable adjustments through the approved HR process, and declaring conflicts of interest. Do not invent requirements, company policies, candidate facts or legal conclusions. Mark missing information as [NEEDS DECISION]. Keep the final scorecard concise enough to use during a live interview. Put the finished scorecard in clear tables or headings, followed by a separate list of decisions that the hiring manager or HR team must approve.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot decide which behaviours genuinely predict success in your particular role when the brief is vague.
- It can produce polished rating anchors that sound objective but still measure taste, confidence or communication style rather than job evidence.
- It cannot take responsibility for whether the criteria, questions or weighting create unfair treatment under UK employment law.
- It cannot know which internal policies, reasonable-adjustment arrangements or approval steps your organisation requires.
- It cannot replace interviewer training or ensure that a panel records evidence consistently during a live interview.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: legal accountability, judgement under ambiguity and verification cost.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 1 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 8 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT create an interview scorecard?
- Yes. Give it the job description, approved criteria and interview questions, and it can draft competencies, evidence standards, rating anchors and interviewer notes. Have HR or an experienced hiring colleague approve the final version before use.
- What should be included in a structured interview scorecard?
- Include the criterion being assessed, the same core question for each candidate, observable evidence indicators, a defined rating scale and a notes field. Include a consistent method for reaching an overall result and instructions to record evidence before assigning a rating.
- Can AI make an interview scorecard fair?
- AI can identify vague, duplicated or apparently irrelevant criteria, but it cannot guarantee that a scorecard is fair in your organisation. Check every criterion and weighting against the role, and ask HR to review employment-law and reasonable-adjustment risks.
- Can AI score candidates from interview answers?
- It can summarise or map answers to criteria if you provide the material and have permission to process it, but that is a separate hiring decision with greater risks. Keep the decision with the trained interview panel, using recorded job-related evidence and your approved process.
