As of 13 August 2026, AI can fill in your subject access request.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

What the alternative costsNo price for a solicitor or subject access request service is provided in the supplied sources.
If this goes wrong: the organisation asks you to clarify or verify the request, and you can correct the draft before sending it again.
What to actually do

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

The distant thirdA chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the organisation's privacy notice or contact page and find the address or email used for data protection or subject access requests.
- Gather your full name, current contact details, any former name or address needed to identify you, and the account, employee or customer reference the organisation already holds.
- Write down the exact personal data you want, including relevant departments, people, subjects, communications and time periods, without asking the chatbot to guess.
- Paste the prompt into a chatbot and replace every bracketed slot with your own information, leaving out unnecessary identity documents and unrelated sensitive data.
- Compare the draft against your notes and the organisation's privacy page, checking the recipient, your identity details, the requested scope and the preferred response format.
- Send the checked request through the organisation's stated channel and keep a copy of the request, attachments and any acknowledgement.
Prompt
Draft a clear UK subject access request to [organisation]. Use only the facts I provide and do not invent dates, account numbers, records or legal claims. My name is [full name], my contact details are [email or postal address], and my relationship with the organisation is [customer, employee, former employee or other]. I want access to [describe the personal data, records, communications or time period]. If the request is too broad, identify the parts that may need narrowing without removing anything silently. Ask the organisation to confirm receipt, explain any identity checks it needs, and provide the response electronically where possible. Keep the tone polite and direct. Do not include unnecessary sensitive personal data. Return only the finished letter followed by a short checklist of details I must check before sending.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot prove your identity or access the organisation's records for you.
- AI cannot know which records the organisation holds unless you describe the relevant account, relationship or events.
- AI cannot decide reliably whether a disputed category of information is covered or exempt in a complex case.
- AI cannot send the request, handle identity checks or chase the organisation for a response.
- AI cannot take responsibility for an inaccurate account of events or for disclosing information you did not mean to include.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: verification cost and legal accountability.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 1 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 8 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can AI write my subject access request?
- Yes. AI can turn your details and a precise description of the records you want into a clear request, but you must check it and send it yourself.
- Can I use ChatGPT for a subject access request?
- Yes, for drafting and organising the information you want to request. Do not paste unnecessary identity documents or sensitive personal data into the chatbot, and check the final letter against the organisation's contact instructions.
- What information do I need for a subject access request?
- You need enough information for the organisation to identify you, your contact details, and a useful description of the personal data or records you want. Include relevant accounts, departments, people and time periods where you know them.
- Is an AI-written subject access request legally valid?
- The fact that AI helped write it does not decide whether the request is accepted. You remain responsible for the facts and information you submit, and this is not professional advice; speak to a solicitor if the request forms part of a serious dispute or legal claim.
