How to actually do it
- Choose the language you want assessed and open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
- Paste the assessment prompt and replace [LANGUAGE] with the language you want to test.
- Complete every reading, writing, listening and speaking task without using a translator or dictionary, and tell the model when a task was not completed under test conditions.
- Ask the model to repeat any listening or speaking task that could not be assessed properly because the chat had no suitable voice or audio function.
- Copy the final skill estimates and compare their descriptions with the CEFR self-assessment grid from the Council of Europe or a recognised language school.
- Use the lowest clearly supported skill estimate to choose study material, and book a recognised placement test if you need proof for a course, job or visa.

- AI cannot reliably judge listening ability when it has no controlled audio to play and assess.
- A chat estimate can overvalue prepared writing and undervalue hesitation, pronunciation and real-time conversation.
- It cannot turn an informal estimate into an official CEFR certificate.
- It cannot know whether your performance reflects your normal ability unless you complete varied tasks under consistent conditions.
- It may assign a single overall level when your four skills are uneven.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, verification cost and context depth.

- Can ChatGPT test my language level?
- Yes. It can give you tasks, assess your answers and estimate your level across the skills you actually demonstrate. Treat the result as an informal estimate, not an official qualification.
- How accurate is an AI language level test?
- It is most useful for a quick starting estimate based on writing and conversation. Accuracy falls when listening or speaking cannot be tested properly, or when the assessment relies on too few samples.
- Can AI tell me if I am B1 or B2?
- It can compare your answers with CEFR-style descriptions and suggest whether your performance is closer to B1 or B2. Ask for evidence from your answers and separate estimates for reading, writing, listening and speaking rather than accepting one unexplained label.
- Can an AI language test replace an official exam?
- No. An AI assessment does not provide recognised proof for a course, job or visa. Use it to choose what to study, then take the exam or placement test required by the relevant organisation.
