YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can improve the structure of your essay.

Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

Can you do it?

5 minutesto a draft.

30 minutesto something you’d act on.

What the alternative costsThe supplied tool data gives no price for a human essay-structuring service.

If this goes wrong: the essay follows a neat but shallow structure, which you can correct before submission by returning to the question and marking criteria.

What to actually do

  1. Do it yourself

    The route this page recommends

A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the assignment brief or course platform and copy the exact essay question, marking criteria, word limit and any rules about using AI.
    2. Gather your current draft and the sources or texts you are allowed to use, removing private details that are not needed for structural feedback.
    3. Paste the prompt into a chatbot, replace each bracketed slot with the copied information, and add the complete draft under the Draft heading.
    4. Ask the chatbot to analyse the paragraph table before accepting its revised outline, and compare each claimed weakness with the actual paragraph it refers to.
    5. Check the proposed outline against the assignment question and marking criteria, keeping only changes that improve your argument rather than changes that merely make the essay sound more formal.
    6. Rewrite the essay yourself using the accepted outline, retaining your own reasoning and checking every quotation, citation and factual claim against the original source.
    7. Compare the finished draft with the marking criteria and your institution's AI policy before submitting it.

    Prompt

Act as an essay-structure tutor, not a ghostwriter. I will provide the assignment question, marking criteria, word limit, required sources and my draft. Analyse only the structure and reasoning. Do not invent facts, sources or quotations, and do not rewrite the essay for submission.

Return your answer in this order:
    1. State the essay's central argument in one sentence, or say that it is unclear.
    2. Give a paragraph-by-paragraph table with the paragraph's current purpose, main claim, evidence used, connection to the question, and the structural problem if there is one.
    3. Identify points that are out of order, repeated, unsupported, too broad or missing a clear link to the argument.
    4. Propose a revised outline using my existing ideas and evidence. For each proposed paragraph, give its purpose, claim, evidence to use, and the link to the next paragraph.
    5. List the smallest changes that would improve the structure most.
    6. Give me five questions I should answer myself before revising.

Do not add new arguments unless you label them as suggestions that need my own research. Preserve my voice and tell me where the marking criteria are not met.

    Assignment question: [paste question]
    Marking criteria: [paste criteria]
    Word limit: [paste word limit]
Required sources or texts: [paste list]
    Draft: [paste draft]

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know which interpretation your tutor expects unless the brief and relevant teaching context are supplied.
  • It can mistake a deliberate qualification for repetition or treat a disputed argument as a structural error.
  • It cannot confirm that your sources genuinely support the claims unless you check the sources yourself.
  • It may produce a tidy generic sequence that weakens your original insight.
  • It cannot decide whether using its suggestions complies with your institution's academic integrity rules.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: context depth, judgement under ambiguity and taste.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT improve the structure of my essay?
Yes. Give it the exact question, marking criteria, word limit and your draft, and ask for a paragraph-by-paragraph diagnosis followed by a revised outline. Use the outline as advice and rewrite the essay yourself.
Can AI organise my essay paragraphs?
Yes, it can suggest a clearer order and identify paragraphs that repeat, lack evidence or do not answer the question. Check every suggested move against your argument and the marking criteria before changing the draft.
Is it cheating to use AI to improve my essay structure?
That depends on your school or university's policy and on how much of the work the tool produces. Ask for structural feedback rather than a rewritten essay, keep your own reasoning and check the rules before submitting.
How do I ask AI to improve my essay?
Paste the assignment question, marking criteria, word limit, permitted sources and your draft into a prompt that asks for structural analysis rather than ghostwriting. Tell it not to invent evidence or rewrite the essay for submission, then verify its suggestions against the original sources.
