If this goes wrong: a card contains an error or tests a minor detail, and you remove it after comparing it with your notes.

The route this page recommends
A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open your revision notes and remove unrelated material, duplicated passages and personal information you do not want to upload.
- Write down the subject, exam level, exam board if relevant, and the topics that must be covered.
- Paste the prompt into a chatbot, replace the bracketed details, and paste the cleaned notes where indicated.
- Ask for the cards in the table format specified by the prompt, then copy the result into a document or flashcard app.
- Compare each answer with the original notes, correct wording that changes the meaning, and delete any card that is unsupported by the notes.
- Mark cards by topic and test yourself with the answers hidden before adding the checked set to your normal revision routine.
Prompt
Turn the revision notes below into study flashcards for [subject and exam level]. Use only information contained in the notes. Do not add facts, fill gaps or guess what the notes mean. Make one clear question and answer per card, with enough context that each card makes sense on its own. Test key definitions, processes, causes, comparisons, examples and dates where they appear in the notes. Keep answers concise but complete. Avoid duplicate cards and avoid questions whose answers are simply 'yes' or 'no'. If a point in the notes is ambiguous, contradictory or incomplete, list it separately under 'Needs checking' instead of making a card. Format the result as a numbered table with these columns: Question, Answer, Topic. After the table, list the points that were not turned into cards and explain why. Revision notes: [paste notes here]

What it gets wrong
- It cannot know whether your notes cover the full specification unless you provide the specification or a complete topic list.
- It can turn an unclear or oversimplified note into a confident-looking card unless the prompt tells it to flag uncertainty.
- It cannot decide which facts your teacher is most likely to assess without information about your course and exam.
- It does not replace retrieval practice: producing cards is easier than using them consistently and correcting your own misunderstandings.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: context depth and judgement under ambiguity.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT make flashcards from my notes?
- Yes. Paste your notes with the subject and exam level, and ask for concise question-and-answer cards using only the supplied material. Compare the finished cards with your notes before relying on them.
- Are AI flashcards accurate?
- They can contain errors, omissions or misleading wording, especially when the notes are incomplete. Accuracy is checkable here because you can compare each card with the source notes and delete anything unsupported.
- What is the best AI tool for making flashcards?
- StudyFetch is a purpose-built option that turns course materials into AI flashcards, quizzes and a tutor. A general chatbot is also enough if you want to control the format with a prompt.
- How do I make good flashcards from revision notes?
- Use one clear question per card, keep each answer concise, and cover definitions, processes, comparisons and examples rather than copying whole paragraphs. Check every card against the notes and practise with the answer hidden.
