How to actually do it
- Find the electricity meter and wipe the display or glass so the digits and dials are visible.
- Wake the display if it is blank, and take a straight, well-lit photograph showing the whole meter face without flash glare.
- If the meter cycles through readings or has more than one register, take a separate photograph of each screen or register.
- Open a multimodal chatbot such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, paste the prompt, and upload the photograph or photographs.
- Compare every digit and register in the response with the physical meter, and reject any digit the photograph does not show clearly.
- Record the confirmed reading with its unit and register name, or take the requested replacement photograph before using it for your supplier.

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot access the meter or wake a blank display, so you still need to reach it and take the photographs.
- It cannot recover a digit hidden by glare, dirt, reflection or a damaged screen.
- It can misinterpret dial positions when a pointer is close to a number, so the physical dials remain the authority.
- It cannot know which register your supplier is asking for unless the display or your instructions identify it.
