NO

As of 12 August 2026, AI cannot replace your SDR outreach.

This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

Can you do it?

What the alternative costsAn SDR agency retainer commonly runs £2,000–£5,000 a month.

If this goes wrong: your sending domain earns a spam reputation that follows every future email, and the prospects you most needed remember you as the template that got their company wrong.

What to actually do

  1. Hand it to a person

    The route this page recommends

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Do it yourself

    The distant third

A chat interface gets you a draft, but you cannot verify it yourself. That is the catch.

    Prompt

Here is one prospect, what we sell, and one genuine reason this specific prospect might care, which I have written myself. Draft a three-sentence outreach email in plain English with no flattery and no invented familiarity, and flag anything in your draft you could not verify from what I gave you.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

What it gets wrong

  • Invents familiarity: references to a prospect’s work it has not read, which reads as exactly the template it is.
  • Optimises for volume, and volume is the failure: identical AI cadences are what spam filters and buyers have both learned to discard.
  • Cannot own deliverability: warmed domains, list hygiene and consent under UK marketing rules are the actual work, and none of it is prompting.

What makes this a NO: relationship, consent and privacy and verification cost.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can AI replace our SDRs?
No. The answer here is NO. A model drafts messages, but outreach that books meetings runs on relevance, timing and sender reputation, and those live in your prospect data, your sending domain and a person who owns the pipeline.
Why does AI cold outreach get such bad reply rates?
Because the receiving side adapted first. Identical cadences and invented personalisation are pattern-matched by spam filters and by buyers, so the send that cost you nothing also signals it cost you nothing. Reply rates follow the effort the reader can detect.
What can AI safely do for our outbound?
One email at a time, from a real reason to write that you supply. It drafts well when a person owns the list, the claim and the send, and it summarises research you then check. What it cannot own is the relationship the email is trying to start.
Is AI cold email legal in the UK?
The rules do not care who wrote the email. UK direct marketing law (PECR) governs electronic marketing, and prospect lists are personal data under UK GDPR. Automation does not change the rules; it scales the consequences of breaking them.
