As of 13 August 2026, AI can only partly restore a deleted OneDrive file.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

If this goes wrong: you may restore the wrong version or discover that retention has expired, but the original deletion is not normally made worse by asking for instructions.
What to actually do
Do it yourself
The route this page recommends
A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open OneDrive in your browser using the work account that owned or stored the file, and do not paste your password or access tokens into the chatbot.
- Open the OneDrive Recycle bin and search for the file name, checking the original folder and deletion details where shown.
- Select the matching file, choose Restore, then open its original folder and confirm that the file opens with the expected name and recent contents.
- If the file is absent, paste the exact result and any error message into the chatbot, along with whether the file was in your own OneDrive or a SharePoint or Teams library.
- Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator or IT team to check the second-stage Recycle bin, retention settings and approved backups when the normal Recycle bin does not contain the file.
- After recovery, compare the restored file with a known copy or recent version, confirm that the required colleagues can still access it, and tell IT if permissions or contents are wrong.
Prompt
Help me recover a deleted OneDrive file without accessing my account or asking for passwords. This is a [work or personal] OneDrive account. The file name is [file name], its original folder was [folder path if known], and I last saw it around [approximate date or time]. I have already checked [what I checked]. Give me a short, numbered recovery plan using the current OneDrive web interface. Cover the normal Recycle bin, what to do if the file is not there, and when a Microsoft 365 administrator or my IT team must check the second-stage Recycle bin, retention settings or backups. Do not invent menu names, retention periods or recovery guarantees. Tell me exactly what I should verify after restoring the file, and stop rather than suggesting unsafe recovery software or deletion of other files.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot sign into OneDrive, inspect the account or press Restore on your behalf.
- AI cannot know whether the file was in personal OneDrive, a SharePoint library, a Teams folder or a synchronised local folder unless you tell it.
- AI cannot see your organisation's retention settings, second-stage Recycle bin or backup system.
- AI cannot guarantee recovery after retention has expired or after a file has been permanently deleted.
- AI cannot establish which copy or version is authoritative when several files have similar names.
What caps this at PARTLY: private data access, context depth and stakes of error.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ
- Can ChatGPT restore a deleted OneDrive file for me?
- Not directly. It can guide you through the OneDrive Recycle bin and help interpret an error, but you must sign in and restore the file yourself or ask your IT team.
- How do I recover a deleted file from OneDrive?
- Open OneDrive, go to the Recycle bin, find the file and select Restore. If it is not there, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator or IT team to check the second-stage Recycle bin, retention settings and approved backups.
- What if my deleted OneDrive file is not in the Recycle bin?
- First establish whether it was stored in OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams or only on a synchronised computer. Then give IT the file name, original location and approximate deletion time so they can check the organisation's available recovery options.
- Is it safe to use AI to recover a deleted OneDrive file?
- It is generally safe to use AI for generic navigation and troubleshooting if you remove passwords, links containing access tokens and confidential file contents. Do not follow instructions that ask you to delete more files, install unknown recovery software or bypass your organisation's access controls.
