As of 13 August 2026, AI can only partly sort your photos into albums.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

What the alternative costsNo priced alternative for automatic album sorting is provided in the available tool data.
If this goes wrong: photos end up in the wrong albums and you have to move them back after checking the assignments.

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
Do it yourself
Second choiceA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 1 hour until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open your phone or computer's Photos app and decide which album groups you actually want, such as holidays, family events, pets, documents or favourites.
- Gather a manageable batch of photos from the library and keep their original filenames or a way to match each image to the AI's table.
- Open a chatbot, paste the prompt, replace the bracketed album preferences and context, then upload the batch of photos.
- Ask the chatbot to produce the filename table and a separate list of low-confidence or possibly duplicated assignments.
- Open the Photos app, create the agreed album names, and compare each proposed assignment with the actual image before moving it.
- Move only the checked photos into albums, leaving low-confidence images in the main library until you decide where they belong.
Prompt
Help me sort a batch of photos into albums. I will upload the photos and provide their filenames where available. Create a short list of useful album names based only on what is visible in the photos and the context I provide. Then return a table with one row per photo containing: filename, suggested album, confidence as high, medium or low, and a brief reason. Use these album preferences: [for example, holidays, family events, pets, hobbies, documents, favourites]. Use this context: [dates, places, events or other facts I know]. Do not identify people, infer relationships, invent dates or locations, or treat an uncertain guess as fact. If a photo could reasonably belong in more than one album, list the best choice first and name the alternative. Mark anything unclear as low confidence. Keep original filenames unchanged. Do not suggest deleting, editing or hiding any photo.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot reliably access and organise your entire private photo library without an integration that has permission to do so.
- AI cannot know whether an ambiguous photo matters to you, such as which family event or holiday it belongs to.
- AI can confuse similar places, people and occasions, especially when the image contains little visible context.
- AI does not replace the final work of creating albums and checking that every photo went to the right place.
What caps this at PARTLY: private data access, judgement under ambiguity and verification cost.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 1 |
| Inputs | 1 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 1 |
| Total | 6 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT organise my photos into albums?
- Partly. It can classify uploaded photos and return a filename-to-album list, but it normally cannot browse your complete phone library or create the albums for you.
- Can AI sort photos by date and location?
- It can use dates and locations that you provide, and some uploaded images may contain visible clues. Do not treat an inferred location or date as reliable unless you confirm it from the photo's metadata or your own records.
- Is it safe to upload personal photos to AI?
- Only upload photos you are comfortable sharing with the service, and remove images containing documents, private addresses or other sensitive information unless the service's handling of them is acceptable to you. A chatbot also cannot make the privacy decision for you.
- What is the easiest way to sort thousands of photos?
- Use AI to propose album names and sort smaller batches, then apply the checked assignments in your existing Photos app. It will not remove the need to handle a large library in batches or resolve uncertain images.
