As of 13 August 2026, AI can write a mission statement for your business.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

If this goes wrong: the statement sounds generic or claims values your business does not demonstrate, and you can replace it before publishing.

The route this page recommends
A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open a blank note and write down your business name, what you sell, who you serve and the problem you solve.
- Add the reason the business exists, the values you can demonstrate with examples and the change you want to make for customers.
- Paste the prompt into a chatbot, replace every bracketed slot with your information and ask it to produce the five versions.
- Delete any draft that contains a claim, customer group or impact you did not provide, then ask the chatbot to rewrite the remaining options using only your facts.
- Read the shortlist aloud to a colleague or co-founder, compare each sentence with your actual products and behaviour, and publish the version they agree is accurate.
Prompt
Write five possible mission statements for my business using the information below. Keep each to one or two sentences, use plain British English, and avoid corporate clichés, inflated claims and vague words such as 'empower', 'revolutionise' and 'world-class'. Make each version distinct: one direct, one warm, one practical, one ambitious and one concise. Do not invent facts, customers, achievements or social impact. After the five options, list any important detail that is missing or unclear and explain which claims I should check before using them. Business name: [business name] What we sell or do: [products or services] Who we serve: [specific customers] The problem we help with: [problem] Why the business exists: [founding purpose] Values we actually demonstrate: [values with a brief example for each] The change we want to make: [intended outcome] Tone to avoid: [for example, formal, playful or sales-led] Maximum length: [number of words or 'one sentence']
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot discover the genuine reason your business exists unless you provide it.
- It cannot tell whether a stated value is demonstrated in your decisions or is only an attractive word.
- It defaults to familiar business language, so the first drafts can sound interchangeable with competitors.
- It cannot decide which promise your team is willing and able to keep.
- It cannot replace agreement between founders or staff about what the business stands for.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: taste and context depth.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT write a mission statement?
- Yes. It can turn your notes about your purpose, customers, values and intended impact into several usable drafts, but you need to supply the substance and remove any invented claims.
- What should a business mission statement include?
- It should say why the business exists, who it serves and what useful change it aims to make. Keep it tied to what you actually do rather than broad promises about changing the world.
- How long should a mission statement be?
- One or two clear sentences is usually enough for a website, plan or internal document. Ask the chatbot for a short version and a longer version, then keep the one your team can remember and use.
- How do I stop AI writing a generic mission statement?
- Give it specific customers, services, problems, values and examples of how those values appear in practice. Ask for plain British English, ban clichés and check every claim against how your business actually operates.
