As of 13 August 2026, AI can write your UK CV.
Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

If this goes wrong: the CV contains an invented or weakly supported claim, looks generic, and costs you an opportunity before you notice.

Second choiceA chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the full job advert and copy it into a document, including the duties, essential criteria, desirable criteria and any stated application instructions.
- Gather your current CV, employment dates, job titles, qualifications, training, professional memberships, relevant systems and tools, and the strongest evidence of results from each relevant role.
- Remove or redact unnecessary personal information such as your National Insurance number before pasting your material into a chatbot.
- Paste the job advert and your information into the prompt, then ask the chatbot to produce the tailored UK CV and its list of claims needing a factual check.
- Compare every employer, job title, date, qualification, responsibility and achievement in the draft with your records, replacing every [NEEDS YOUR DETAIL] marker before saving it.
- Compare the profile, skills and experience bullets with the advert, delete unsupported claims and add genuine evidence for any requirement you can demonstrate.
- Paste the final text into a clean CV document, check its layout and contact details, save it as a PDF if the application instructions request one, and send it only after reading the complete document yourself.
Prompt
Write a tailored UK CV for the role below using only the information I provide. Invent nothing, including job titles, dates, qualifications, employers, achievements, software, metrics or responsibilities. If an important detail is missing, mark it as [NEEDS YOUR DETAIL] rather than guessing. Target job advert: [PASTE THE FULL JOB ADVERT] My current CV or work history: [PASTE YOUR CURRENT CV OR LIST YOUR ROLES, EMPLOYERS, DATES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS] My qualifications, training and professional memberships: [PASTE DETAILS] My relevant skills, systems and tools: [PASTE DETAILS] Additional facts I want included: [PASTE DETAILS] Create a clear UK CV in plain English. Tailor the professional profile, skills and experience to the advert, but do not copy the advert's wording so closely that it sounds artificial. Prioritise specific evidence and outcomes over empty adjectives. Keep the employment history in reverse chronological order, use consistent headings and bullet points, and make it easy to scan. Do not include a photo, date of birth, marital status, National Insurance number or other unnecessary personal details. Do not add references unless requested. After the CV, provide a short list of every claim or section that needs my factual check, and list the important requirements from the advert that the supplied evidence does not yet cover.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
Hand it to a person
The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- It cannot know which achievement best represents you unless you supply the context and evidence.
- It turns vague work history into generic claims when you do not provide specific results or examples.
- It cannot judge the employer's unwritten preferences or the local reputation of a particular team.
- It may produce a polished CV that overstates your experience unless you check every line against your records.
- It cannot decide whether a career change, employment gap or unusual experience needs a personal explanation.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: taste and context depth.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |

FAQ
- Can ChatGPT write my UK CV?
- Yes. It can structure your experience, rewrite weak wording and tailor the CV to a UK job advert, but you must provide the facts and check every claim before sending it.
- Will employers know if AI wrote my CV?
- They may notice generic wording, exaggerated claims or a tone that does not sound like you. Give the model specific evidence, ask for plain English and rewrite any sentence you would not naturally say in an interview.
- Is it free to use AI to write a CV?
- A free chatbot is enough to draft and tailor a CV if you already have the relevant information. A purpose-built product such as Kickresume also provides AI CV and cover letter building with recruiter-tested templates.
- How long does it take AI to write a CV?
- You can usually get a first draft in about five minutes if your work history and the job advert are ready. Allow roughly thirty minutes to check the facts, tailor the evidence and fix the final layout.
