As of 13 August 2026, AI can only partly chase leads for missing information.
Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

What the alternative costsApollo is a prospect database with AI outreach sequences and enrichment, providing a purpose-built alternative to manually organising follow-ups.
If this goes wrong, a lead receives an irrelevant or excessive follow-up, loses trust and may stop responding.

Second choiceA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open your CRM or lead spreadsheet and export the current lead name, company, contact details, stage, previous messages, last contact date, source, consent status and missing fields.
- Write the qualification checklist for this stage, including which answers are essential and which can wait until later.
- Paste the checklist, lead records, approved product facts, current pricing rules and permitted links into the prompt.
- Ask the model to produce the action table and follow-up drafts, then remove any claim or personal detail that is not present in your supplied records.
- Compare each recommended action and message with the original contact history, consent record, approved facts and your normal contact-frequency rules.
- Send only the approved messages through your normal email, CRM or messaging system, then record the send date and classify each reply against the model's reply categories.
- Feed new replies back into the same workflow and check that every required field is now supported by the lead's own words or an approved source before progressing the lead.
Prompt
You are helping me follow up with sales leads who have not supplied required information. Work only from the data I provide and invent nothing. Required information for this qualification stage: [LIST THE FIELDS OR ANSWERS NEEDED] Lead records: [PASTE LEAD NAME, COMPANY, CONTACT DETAILS, CURRENT STAGE, MISSING FIELDS, PREVIOUS MESSAGES, LAST CONTACT DATE, SOURCE AND ANY CONSENT OR CONTACT RESTRICTIONS] Our approved facts, offer and links: [PASTE APPROVED COMPANY INFORMATION, PRODUCT FACTS, PRICING RULES AND LINKS] For each lead: 1. List the exact missing information and distinguish it from information already supplied. 2. Recommend whether to follow up now, wait, or stop, based only on the contact history and rules I supplied. If the evidence is insufficient, say so. 3. Draft one concise follow-up in the same channel and tone as the previous exchange. Ask only for the information needed at this stage. 4. Do not invent personal details, urgency, availability, customer examples, prices, deadlines or claims about our product. 5. Include a clear opt-out route where appropriate and do not recommend contacting anyone where consent or contact restrictions are unclear. 6. Classify likely replies as complete, partly complete, unclear, objection, opt-out or no reply, and state what I should do next. 7. Produce a table with lead, missing information, recommended action, drafted message and verification check. Do not send anything. Flag every item that needs my decision before sending.

Hand it to a person
The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know whether a lead is genuinely busy, politely disengaging or waiting for a different person unless the record contains that context.
- It cannot take responsibility for consent, contact frequency or whether a follow-up damages an important relationship.
- It cannot verify that a lead's answer is commercially meaningful when the answer is vague or ambiguous.
- It cannot replace a salesperson's judgement about when to stop chasing and change the conversation.
- It cannot safely send messages containing facts, prices or commitments that you have not supplied and approved.
What caps this at PARTLY: consent and privacy, relationship and judgement under ambiguity.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 1 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 1 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 7 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can AI follow up with leads automatically?
- Yes, AI can draft and sequence follow-ups, and purpose-built tools can support outreach workflows. You still need to provide accurate lead data, confirm consent and approve exceptions before messages are sent.
- Can AI ask leads for missing information?
- Yes. Give it the required fields and the previous conversation, and it can ask focused questions rather than repeating information the lead already supplied. Check every question against the record before sending.
- Can AI tell which leads need chasing?
- It can rank leads using supplied stages, dates, missing fields and contact rules. It cannot reliably infer buying intent or relationship context that is absent from the CRM, so review the priority list.
- Is it safe to let AI email my sales leads?
- Only with controls around consent, approved claims, contact frequency and human approval. You remain accountable for the message and the relationship, so do not allow automatic sending where the lead's permission or context is unclear.
