YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can create interview questions from a candidate's CV.

This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

Can you do it?

What the alternative costsNo comparable human-service price is provided in the available tool data.

If this goes wrong: the interview becomes inconsistent or asks an inappropriate question, which can damage the candidate experience and your hiring decision.

What to actually do

  1. Hand it to a person

    The route this page recommends

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

  2. Use a tool built for this

  3. Do it yourself

    The distant third

A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the approved job description and copy the responsibilities, essential criteria and desirable criteria into a separate document.
    2. Open the candidate's CV and remove unrelated personal information before copying the employment history, qualifications, achievements and dates into the prompt.
    3. Paste the job description, CV, interview stage, interview length and assessment criteria into the prompt, then ask the chatbot to create the question set.
    4. Compare every drafted question with the cited job requirement or CV line, and delete questions that are not relevant to the role.
    5. Check the questions for leading wording, assumptions about protected characteristics, personal circumstances or health, and anything that would not be asked consistently of other candidates.
    6. Put the approved core questions and scoring guides into the interview form, with optional follow-ups clearly separated.
    7. Ask a recruiting colleague or HR adviser to check the final set if the role is regulated, sensitive or likely to attract an employment dispute.

    Prompt

Create a structured interview question set for the role described below.

Use the candidate CV only to identify claims, experience and areas worth exploring. Do not infer protected characteristics, personal circumstances or personality traits. Do not recommend whether to hire the candidate.

    Produce:
    1. Six competency or experience questions linked to the job requirements.
    2. Three CV-specific follow-up questions that test the candidate's actual contribution, decisions and results without assuming the CV is accurate.
    3. Two practical or scenario questions relevant to the role.
    4. One fair scoring guide for each question, with evidence of a strong, adequate and weak answer.
    5. A short list of any questions that should be removed because they are irrelevant, leading, discriminatory or unsupported by the job requirements.

Keep the questions suitable for a UK workplace interview. Use the same core questions for every candidate for this role, and mark optional follow-ups separately. Do not invent facts, achievements or requirements. State which CV line or job requirement supports each question.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know which parts of a CV matter most in the context of your team, manager or current business problem.
  • AI cannot reliably distinguish an impressive-sounding achievement from a claim that needs deeper evidence without your follow-up judgement.
  • AI cannot take responsibility for consistency, discrimination risk or the effect of the questions on the hiring decision.
  • AI can produce generic competency questions unless you supply the actual requirements and interview context.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: legal accountability, judgement under ambiguity and context depth.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT create interview questions from a CV?
Yes. Give it the CV, job description and assessment criteria, and it can draft structured questions, CV-specific follow-ups and scoring guidance. Check every question for relevance, fairness and consistency before using it.
Can AI make interview questions fair?
It can identify leading or irrelevant wording and help you use the same core questions for each candidate. It cannot guarantee that your process is fair or lawful, so the employer or an HR adviser must make the final check.
Should I let AI read a candidate's CV?
Only use a chatbot or recruitment system in line with your organisation's data-protection policy and the candidate information you are permitted to process. Remove unnecessary personal data, avoid inferring sensitive characteristics and do not paste confidential information into an unapproved service.
Can AI decide which interview questions to ask?
It can suggest questions based on the role and points in the CV, but you should decide which questions are necessary and ask them consistently across candidates. AI should not decide whether the candidate passes or gets the job.
