YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can create STAR interview questions.

This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

Can you do it?

5 minutesto a draft.

15 minutesto something you’d act on.

What the alternative costsThe available tool data gives no price for a human interview-design service.

If this goes wrong: the questions are generic or unfair, so you replace them before using them with candidates.

What to actually do

  1. Hand it to a person

    The route this page recommends

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Do it yourself

    The distant third

A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the current job description and copy the duties, essential criteria, desirable criteria and named competencies into a working document.
    2. Decide how many questions the interview can cover and list the competencies that must be assessed, including the time available for each section.
    3. Paste the job details and competencies into a chatbot using the supplied prompt, then ask it to produce the interview pack in a table.
    4. Compare every drafted question with the job description and remove questions that test an unlisted or unnecessary attribute.
    5. Check each question and follow-up against UK equality and fair recruitment guidance, removing personal questions and assumptions about a candidate's circumstances.
    6. Ask a colleague who understands the role to answer whether each question has a clear scoring standard, then revise ambiguous scoring descriptions.
    7. Send the final question set and scoring guide to the interview panel, with instructions to ask the same core questions and record evidence against the agreed criteria.

    Prompt

Create a structured interview pack for the UK role described below.

    Role: [job title]
Organisation and sector: [organisation and sector]
    Seniority: [level]
    Interview length: [length]
Competencies to assess: [list the competencies]
Job description: [paste the current job description]

Write [number] behavioural interview questions using the STAR method. Each question must test one clearly named competency and be answerable using a candidate's past experience. For each question, provide:
    1. The competency being assessed.
    2. The main question.
    3. Two neutral follow-up prompts covering Situation, Task, Action or Result.
    4. A simple scoring guide from 1 to 5 describing weak, acceptable and strong evidence.
    5. What evidence an interviewer should listen for.

Use plain UK English. Keep questions specific to the role, but do not assume facts that are not in the job description. Do not ask about age, disability, health, pregnancy, family responsibilities, religion, race, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, or other personal matters unrelated to the role. Do not make a hiring recommendation. Flag any question that needs review for relevance, fairness or consistency before use.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

What it gets wrong

  • AI does not know which competencies genuinely distinguish success in your team unless you provide that context.
  • It produces plausible questions that can still be repetitive, leading or too easy to answer with rehearsed examples.
  • It cannot decide whether a question is proportionate for your recruitment process or appropriate for a particular candidate situation.
  • It does not take responsibility for discriminatory wording, inconsistent questioning or the hiring decision that follows.
  • It cannot replace a trained interviewer who can probe an unclear answer while keeping the process consistent.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, legal accountability and context depth.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT write STAR interview questions?
Yes. Give it the job description, competencies, seniority and interview length, and it can draft behavioural questions, follow-up prompts and scoring criteria. You still need to check that every question is relevant, fair and suitable for the role.
How do I get AI to write good STAR questions?
Ask for one question per competency, neutral follow-ups and a scoring guide based on evidence rather than personality. Tell it not to invent requirements or ask about protected characteristics, then compare the result with the actual job description.
Are AI-generated interview questions legal in the UK?
The use of AI does not make an interview question lawful or unlawful by itself. You are responsible for avoiding discriminatory or irrelevant questions and for applying the process consistently; this is not professional advice, and a serious case needs an employment solicitor or qualified HR professional.
Can AI score candidates' STAR answers?
It can suggest a scoring framework or organise notes against agreed criteria, but it should not own the hiring decision. A trained interviewer should assess the evidence consistently, check the record and account for reasonable adjustments and relevant context.
