YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can explain being made redundant in an interview.

Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

Can you do it?

What the alternative costsA purpose-built alternative is Final Round AI, which provides AI mock interviews and live interview preparation.

If this goes wrong: you sound defensive, disclose more than you intended or appear to blame your former employer, and the interviewer may move on to another candidate.

What to actually do

  1. Use a tool built for this

    The route this page recommends

  2. Do it yourself

    Second choice

A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the job advert and copy the target role, employer name and main requirements into a separate note.
    2. Write down the factual reason for the redundancy, your leaving month and year, and any boundaries around what you will not discuss.
    3. Add two or three genuine achievements or lessons from the previous role and what you have done since leaving.
    4. Paste those notes and the job advert into the prompt, then ask the chatbot to produce the spoken answer and follow-up questions.
    5. Compare every sentence with your own employment history and delete any claim, date or implication that is not accurate.
    6. Read the answer aloud and replace phrases you would not normally use with your own words, keeping the explanation brief and bringing it back to the target role.
    7. Practise answering the three follow-up questions without reading the script, then use Yoodli or Final Round AI for a recorded or mock interview if you need spoken delivery practice.

    Prompt

Help me prepare a truthful, calm answer to the interview question about why I left my previous job after being made redundant.

    My facts:
    - Previous role and employer: [ROLE AND EMPLOYER]
    - What happened, stated factually: [BRIEF FACTUAL ACCOUNT]
    - When I left: [MONTH AND YEAR]
    - What I achieved or learned in the role: [ACHIEVEMENTS OR LEARNING]
    - What I have done since: [WORK, TRAINING, VOLUNTARY WORK OR JOB SEARCH]
    - Role I am applying for: [TARGET ROLE]
    - Job description or key requirements: [PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION OR REQUIREMENTS]
    - Anything I do not want to discuss: [OPTIONAL BOUNDARIES]

Write a spoken answer of about 45 to 75 seconds. Keep it professional, direct and non-defensive. Explain the redundancy briefly, do not blame or criticise my former employer, and move quickly to what I achieved, what I learned and why I am suitable for this role. Use only the facts I supplied, invent nothing and do not imply that I chose redundancy if I did not. Then give me three likely follow-up questions and short answer outlines. Flag any sentence that could disclose more personal or confidential information than an interview requires. Use plain UK English.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know which details about the redundancy are safe or wise to disclose in your particular interview.
  • It cannot judge the interviewer’s reaction to wording, pauses or visible discomfort in the way an experienced human interviewer can.
  • It may make the answer sound polished but unnatural, so you still need to turn it into words you can say without memorising a script.
  • It cannot confirm whether your account of the redundancy has implications for an employment dispute or settlement agreement.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, taste and stakes of error.

FAQ

Can AI help me explain being made redundant in an interview?
Yes. It can turn your factual account into a short answer, suggest suitable wording and generate likely follow-up questions. Check every sentence against what happened and practise saying it in your own voice.
What should I say about being made redundant in an interview?
Explain the redundancy briefly and factually, without blaming your former employer. Move on to what you achieved, what you learned and why those points make you suitable for the role.
Will saying I was made redundant hurt my chances?
Redundancy itself does not explain your performance in the new role, so the useful part of the answer is what you did before and after it. AI can help you keep the explanation calm and focused, but it cannot predict how a particular interviewer will respond.
Can AI practise redundancy interview questions with me?
Yes. A chatbot can generate follow-up questions and critique a written answer, while tools such as Final Round AI provide AI mock interviews and live interview preparation. You still need to check that the feedback fits your facts and the role.
