   How to actually do it

   1. Open your CV, employment records and calendar, then write down the exact months of the gap and the broad reason without adding details you cannot defend.
   2. List any relevant work, study, caring, volunteering, travel, job searching or recovery activity during the gap, and separately list details you want to keep private.
   3. Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and replace every bracketed slot with your own information.
   4. Compare each drafted date, activity and claim with your CV and records, then delete anything that is not strictly true or that discloses more than you intend.
   5. Say the short and full answers aloud, change wording that does not sound like you, and ask the chatbot for a plainer version if you would not use a phrase in normal speech.
   6. Practise answering the three follow-up questions without reading, then send the final version to a trusted person who can tell you whether it sounds clear rather than evasive.
