YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can prepare for an NHS interview.

Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

What the alternative costsFinal Round AI is an AI mock interview and live interview preparation tool.

If this goes wrong: your answers sound generic or contain claims you cannot support, and you perform poorly in the interview.

What to actually do

  1. Use a tool built for this

    The route this page recommends

  2. Do it yourself

    Second choice

A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the NHS employer's job advert and person specification, then copy them into a document together with the employer's official information about the service and role.
    2. Gather three to five real examples from your work, volunteering, education or caring experience that show actions and outcomes relevant to the person specification.
    3. Paste the advert, person specification, employer information and your examples into the prompt, then ask the chatbot to identify the assessed competencies and likely questions.
    4. Answer the chatbot's requests for missing details using only events you can describe truthfully, and ask it to turn each example into a natural spoken answer using Situation, Task, Action and Result where appropriate.
    5. Use the mock interview instruction and answer each question aloud before reading the feedback, then rewrite any answer that contains a claim you cannot support.
    6. Compare every employer-specific statement in the preparation pack with the original advert or the employer's official website, removing anything you cannot confirm.
    7. Ask the chatbot for a final short list of questions to ask the panel, then practise your answers aloud without reading the generated wording.

    Prompt

Help me prepare for an NHS interview for [JOB TITLE] with [NHS TRUST, HEALTH BOARD OR NHS EMPLOYER]. I will paste the job advert, person specification and any employer information below.

Create a practical preparation pack that includes:
    1. The main competencies, duties and themes the panel is likely to assess, using only the material I provide and clearly labelling any reasonable inference.
    2. Twelve likely interview questions, including motivation, teamwork, communication, handling pressure, equality and inclusion, safeguarding where relevant to the role, and role-specific questions.
    3. For each question, give a short answer plan using Situation, Task, Action and Result where that structure fits. Do not write invented experiences, achievements, qualifications, policies or statistics.
    4. Ask me for the personal example needed for each answer before drafting it. If my information is incomplete, mark the gap instead of filling it.
    5. After I provide my examples, turn them into natural spoken answers in plain British English. Keep the claims accurate and make the answers specific to this role.
    6. Run a mock interview one question at a time. Wait for my answer, then give feedback on relevance, structure, evidence, clarity and length, followed by one improved version that still uses only my facts.
    7. List sensible questions I could ask the panel.
    8. Flag every current NHS or employer-specific fact that I should check against the job advert or the employer's official website before the interview.

Do not pretend to know the panel's questions, the employer's current policies or the outcome. Do not give clinical, legal or employment-law advice. Start by asking me for the job advert, person specification and my relevant experience.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know the panel's priorities, the service's internal culture or the unadvertised pressures of the role.
  • It turns thin examples into polished answers, so a confident-sounding answer can still lack evidence.
  • It cannot judge your warmth, confidence, listening or body language as reliably as a person watching the full rehearsal.
  • It cannot replace your understanding of the patients, colleagues or community affected by the role.
  • It may state current NHS or employer information incorrectly unless you check it against official sources.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: context depth, judgement under ambiguity and stakes of error.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT help me prepare for an NHS interview?
Yes. It can turn the job advert and person specification into practice questions, help structure your real examples and run a mock interview. Check employer-specific facts and remove any claim that does not come from your own experience.
What questions will I be asked at an NHS interview?
AI can suggest questions from the duties and criteria in your advert, including teamwork, communication, pressure and motivation. It cannot know the panel's exact questions, so prepare themes and examples rather than memorising a script.
How do I answer NHS interview questions using STAR?
Use Situation and Task to set the context, explain the specific Action you took, and finish with the Result and what you learned where relevant. AI can structure your example, but the event, outcome and reflection must be yours.
Can AI do a mock NHS interview?
Yes. A chatbot can ask questions one at a time and comment on relevance, structure and clarity, while tools such as Final Round AI are designed for mock interviews and live interview preparation. Practise aloud as well, because text feedback cannot fully assess your delivery.
