YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can explain a job description before your interview.

Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

Can you do it?

5 minutesto a draft.

15 minutesto something you’d act on.

What the alternative costsFinal Round AI provides AI mock interviews and live interview preparation.

If this goes wrong: you prepare for a generic version of the role and need to correct your notes before the interview.

What to actually do

  1. Do it yourself

    The route this page recommends

A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the original job advert and copy the full job description, including the responsibilities, essential criteria, desirable criteria and working arrangements.
    2. Paste the advert into the prompt, then add any relevant experience, qualifications or concerns you want the explanation to take into account.
    3. Ask the chatbot to separate statements from inferences and to mark anything about the employer or role that is unknown.
    4. Open a notes document and copy the summary, prioritised responsibilities, translated jargon and interview topics into separate headings.
    5. Compare every stated requirement in the response with the original advert and delete any claim about the employer, salary, team or process that the advert does not support.
    6. For each likely interview topic, write one real example from your experience and mark any topic where you need to research the role or employer before the interview.
    7. Take the three clarification questions and choose the ones you can ask the interviewer without repeating information already clear in the advert.

    Prompt

Explain this job description before my interview in plain British English. Separate what the advert states directly from what you are inferring. Give me: 1) a two-sentence summary of the role, 2) the main responsibilities in priority order, 3) the skills and experience the employer is most likely to test, 4) any jargon translated into ordinary language, 5) the parts that are unclear or missing, 6) five likely interview topics linked to exact wording in the advert, and 7) three questions I should ask to clarify the role. Do not invent facts about the employer, salary, team, working pattern or hiring process. If something cannot be established from the text, label it as unknown. Job description: [PASTE THE FULL JOB DESCRIPTION HERE]. My relevant experience and concerns: [ADD THESE IF USEFUL].

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • Cannot know which duties take most of the working week when the advert lists them without priorities.
  • Cannot reliably infer the manager's expectations, team culture or reason the vacancy exists from standard recruitment wording.
  • Can turn vague requirements such as 'commercial awareness' or 'strong communication skills' into generic interview advice.
  • Cannot replace your judgement about whether the role, employer and working conditions suit you.
  • May miss important context hidden in the full advert, linked documents or information the recruiter told you separately.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity and context depth.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT explain a job description?
Yes. It can summarise the role, translate jargon, group requirements and suggest interview topics, provided you paste the full advert and ask it to distinguish facts from inferences.
How do I use AI to understand a job description?
Paste the complete advert into a chatbot and ask for the responsibilities, required skills, unclear points and likely interview themes in separate sections. Compare the result with the original wording before using it to plan your answers.
Can AI tell me what questions I will be asked at interview?
It can suggest plausible topics from the responsibilities and criteria in the advert, but it cannot know the exact questions. Treat its suggestions as a preparation list and build answers from your own experience.
Is it safe to paste a job description into AI?
A public job advert normally contains information intended for applicants, but remove private contact details, recruiter notes and confidential documents before pasting. Do not add another person's personal data unless you have permission.
