As of 13 August 2026, AI can find your unnecessary spending.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

What the alternative costsSnoop is an AI spending insights app that works across your UK accounts via open banking.
If this goes wrong: you misclassify a useful payment as unnecessary or miss a recurring cost, and you can restore the payment or correct the list after checking your account.

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
Do it yourself
Second choiceA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Export the relevant transactions from your UK bank account as a CSV or spreadsheet, or copy the transaction section from your statements.
- Remove full account numbers, sort codes, card numbers, addresses and other private details, while keeping the merchant description, date, amount and transaction type.
- Write a short note listing payments you know are essential, such as rent, council tax, utilities, insurance, debt repayments and work costs, plus any spending you want to reduce.
- Paste the note and the redacted transaction data into a chatbot with the supplied prompt, then ask it to use only the transactions provided.
- Open your original bank statement beside the AI output and check every flagged merchant, date, amount, frequency and total against the account record.
- For each remaining candidate, answer whether it is still used, contractually required, shared with someone else, needed for work or likely to incur a fee if cancelled.
- Put confirmed candidates into a cancellation or reduction list, then contact the merchant or change the payment yourself only after checking the relevant contract and upcoming payment date.
Prompt
Analyse the UK bank transaction data below and find spending that may be unnecessary. Treat a payment as a candidate only when the transaction evidence supports it, and do not invent merchant details, categories, amounts or dates. Group transactions into: likely essential, likely discretionary, recurring subscriptions or memberships, avoidable fees, duplicate or unusual payments, and unclear. For every flagged item, show the merchant description exactly as supplied, the date or dates, the amount or amounts, how often it appears, the total shown in the supplied data, and the reason it was flagged. Separate facts from inferences. Do not tell me to cancel anything. Instead, give me a short list of questions I should answer before deciding whether each item is unnecessary. Highlight missing data and transactions that need checking against my bank account. My priorities and known essential payments are: [ADD YOUR DETAILS]. Transaction data: [PASTE A REDACTED CSV, SPREADSHEET OR STATEMENT EXTRACT HERE].

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know whether a purchase is unnecessary from the transaction alone, especially when the merchant description is vague.
- It cannot reliably identify a subscription when the merchant uses different names, payment processors or irregular billing dates.
- It cannot see payments, cash spending or accounts that you do not provide.
- It cannot check cancellation terms, notice periods or the effect of stopping a direct debit unless you supply and verify those details.
- It cannot take responsibility if you cancel an essential service or overlook a payment you still need.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, verification cost and stakes of error.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 1 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 8 / 10 |

FAQ
- Can AI tell me what spending I do not need?
- Yes, it can find likely candidates by sorting transactions, spotting recurring payments and highlighting unusual or discretionary spending. It cannot decide from the bank data alone whether a payment is genuinely unnecessary, so check each candidate against your actual needs.
- Can ChatGPT analyse my bank statements?
- Yes, you can give it a redacted CSV, spreadsheet or statement extract and ask it to group transactions and flag patterns. Remove account and card details first, and compare every amount and date with the original statement.
- Is it safe to upload my bank statement to AI?
- Use a redacted copy and remove account numbers, sort codes, card numbers, addresses and other details that are not needed for the analysis. This is not professional advice, and a serious financial case needs a regulated financial adviser or your bank to check the position.
- Can AI find subscriptions I forgot about?
- It can flag repeated payments and merchants that appear at regular intervals in the transactions you provide. It can miss irregular billing, renamed merchants and payments from other accounts, so confirm each subscription with the merchant or your bank before cancelling it.
