YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can give feedback on your essay.

Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

Can you do it?

What the alternative costsNo human alternative price is supplied in the available tool data.

If this goes wrong: you follow weak or unsuitable feedback and revise the essay in the wrong direction before correcting it against the question and marking criteria.

What to actually do

  1. Do it yourself

    The route this page recommends

A chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the assignment brief, marking rubric and teacher instructions, and copy the question, subject, level and requirements into a single note.
    2. Paste your complete essay into the prompt after removing personal details that are not relevant to the feedback.
    3. Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and paste the complete prompt with the brief and essay, then ask it to produce criterion-by-criterion feedback.
    4. Compare each claimed error or missing point with the essay and mark whether it is a definite problem, a reasonable interpretation or merely a style preference.
    5. Check every comment about evidence, quotations and facts against the sources and notes you actually used, and discard any invented or unsupported claim.
    6. Use the priority list to revise one paragraph at a time, then paste the revised essay back and ask the model to check only whether the original issues were addressed.
    7. Compare the final draft with the assignment question and marking rubric yourself before submitting it, and keep your own argument and wording.

    Prompt

Give feedback on the essay below as a patient UK tutor, not as a ghostwriter. Use the assignment question, level, marking criteria and teacher instructions to assess it. First state the essay's main argument in one sentence. Then identify three strengths and the five most important improvements, ordered by impact on the mark. For each improvement, quote or identify the relevant passage, explain the problem, and give a specific revision action without rewriting the whole essay for me. Check the structure, reasoning, use of evidence, accuracy of claims, paragraph links, clarity, grammar and whether the answer addresses the question. Separate definite errors from suggestions about style or interpretation. Do not invent sources, facts, marks or teacher requirements. End with a short revision plan in priority order and three questions I should answer myself before submitting.

    Assignment question: [paste the question]
    Level and subject: [paste these]
Marking criteria or rubric: [paste this]
Teacher instructions: [paste these, or write 'none supplied']
    Essay draft:
    [paste the essay]

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know how your particular teacher applies an unclear marking criterion unless you provide examples or clarification.
  • AI cannot reliably judge whether a disputed interpretation is persuasive within your subject without sufficient subject knowledge and context.
  • AI can describe a likely weakness but cannot guarantee a mark or replace feedback from the person assessing the work.
  • AI tends to turn debatable stylistic preferences into rules unless you ask it to separate errors from suggestions.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, context depth and taste.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT give feedback on my essay?
Yes. It can identify weaknesses in structure, reasoning, evidence, clarity and grammar, especially when you provide the assignment question and marking rubric. Treat its comments as a second reader's suggestions, not as a guaranteed mark.
Can AI mark my essay?
AI can give an indicative assessment against a rubric, but it cannot reliably predict the mark your teacher or examiner will award. Check every comment against the question and criteria, and do not submit changes you do not understand.
Is it cheating to use AI for essay feedback?
That depends on your school's, college's or university's rules. Asking for critique while keeping the argument and writing your own is different from asking AI to write or substantially rewrite the essay, so check the relevant academic integrity policy.
Can AI improve my essay without rewriting it?
Yes. Ask it to identify the most important problems, explain why they matter and give revision actions without supplying replacement paragraphs. You should make the changes yourself and check that the revised argument still answers the assignment question.
