As of 13 August 2026, AI can organise your study notes.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

What the alternative costsThe alternative is organising the notes manually in a document or notes app, with no tool cost but more of your time.
If this goes wrong, important points may be put under the wrong heading or left out, but you can correct the structure against your original notes.

The route this page recommends
A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open your notes and course materials, then remove unrelated messages, personal details and duplicate copies before copying the study content.
- Paste the prompt into an AI chat and replace the bracketed slots with the subject, course level and assessment type.
- Paste the notes below the prompt, keeping topic headings, definitions, examples and any source references already present.
- Ask the AI to produce the organised notes, key terms, retrieval questions, checking list and revision order in the requested format.
- Compare each organised section with the original notes, moving back any point placed under the wrong heading and restoring anything omitted.
- Check every definition, example and flagged point against your current textbook, handouts or course materials before using the result for revision.
- Save the corrected notes and answer the retrieval questions without looking at the answers, then add any gaps your answers expose.
Prompt
Organise the study notes below for revision. Keep every factual point that appears in the notes, but do not add facts from outside them. Group related points under clear topic headings, remove repeated wording, preserve important examples and definitions, and mark anything unclear or contradictory as [CHECK]. Return: 1. A clean set of organised notes. 2. A short list of key terms and their definitions using only the notes. 3. Five retrieval questions that test the notes without giving away the answers. 4. A list of points that are missing, unclear or need checking against my course materials. 5. A suggested revision order, starting with the foundations. What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know which topics your teacher or examiner will prioritise unless that information is in the material you provide.
- AI can impose a tidy structure that does not match the way your course connects ideas.
- AI can silently merge similar points or remove repetition that was useful for distinguishing two concepts.
- AI cannot tell whether a gap in your notes reflects a difficult topic, an omitted lesson or a point that is not assessed without checking your course materials.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: context depth and judgement under ambiguity.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT organise my notes?
- Yes. Give it the notes and tell it to group related points, remove duplicates and flag anything unclear, then compare the result with the originals.
- Can AI turn my notes into a revision guide?
- Yes. It can format your notes into topics, definitions, retrieval questions and a revision order. It cannot decide what your course will assess unless you provide the relevant course guidance.
- Can AI organise handwritten study notes?
- Usually, if you provide a clear image or transcribe the notes first. Check every word that was difficult to read because the model can misread handwriting, symbols and abbreviated terms.
- Is it safe to upload my study notes to AI?
- It is generally low risk for ordinary subject notes, but remove names, student numbers, private messages and confidential course material before uploading. Check the tool's privacy settings if the notes contain information belonging to someone else.
