As of 13 August 2026, AI can practise for a job interview.
Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

What the alternative costsA purpose-built alternative is Final Round AI, an AI mock interview and live interview preparation tool; no price is supplied here.
If this goes wrong: you rehearse generic or inaccurate answers and carry that weak preparation into the interview.

The route this page recommends
Do it yourself
Second choiceA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the advert for the role and copy the full job description, including the essential criteria and any listed interview information.
- Open your current CV and gather three or four real examples from your experience that show relevant actions and results.
- Paste the job description and your CV or experience notes into the prompt, replacing each bracketed slot before sending it to a chatbot.
- Answer each question aloud first, then type a concise version using only events and results you can defend in the interview.
- Compare each suggested answer with the job description and your own history, deleting any invented detail and adding specific evidence where the advert asks for it.
- Run the final five practice questions again without looking at the drafted answers, then record yourself answering the three weakest areas and listen for vague claims, excessive length, or a memorised tone.
Prompt
Act as a demanding but fair interview coach for this role: [JOB TITLE] at [EMPLOYER]. Use the job description and my CV below. Ask me one interview question at a time, mixing motivation, competency, technical or role-specific, and follow-up questions. Wait for my answer before continuing. After each answer, give concise feedback under these headings: what worked, what was unclear, what evidence is missing, and a stronger version using only facts from my CV. Do not invent achievements, employers, qualifications, responsibilities, or results. Push me to answer with a specific situation, action, and result where appropriate. After six questions, give me a short list of the three issues most worth fixing and five questions I should practise again. Keep the tone realistic for a UK interview and do not write answers that sound memorised or exaggerated. JOB DESCRIPTION: [PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION] MY CV OR EXPERIENCE NOTES: [PASTE CV OR EXPERIENCE NOTES]
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
Hand it to a person
The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot observe the full effect of your body language, eye contact, pace, or presence in the room from a text exchange.
- AI cannot know which answer style a particular interviewer will prefer or how the panel will interpret an ambiguous question.
- It turns your notes into plausible answers but cannot supply genuine evidence from your work history.
- It can reward polished wording even when the answer is thin, so fluency can disguise a lack of substance.
- It cannot replace a real person who can interrupt naturally, react to your tone, and tell you how you come across.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity and stakes of error.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 1 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 8 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT practise an interview with me?
- Yes. It can ask realistic questions one at a time, follow up on vague answers, and give you a structure for improving them. Give it the job description and your real experience, and check every suggested answer before using it.
- Can AI give me answers to interview questions?
- It can help you shape answers, but you should not memorise a script. Use it to find relevant evidence from your own experience and practise saying the answer naturally.
- Is AI interview practice worth it?
- Yes, if you use it for repeated practice rather than a single polished script. It is useful for generating questions and exposing gaps, but a person is better at judging how convincing and natural you sound.
- What is the best AI tool for mock interviews?
- Final Round AI is a purpose-built option for AI mock interviews and live interview preparation. Yoodli is another relevant option, described as an AI speech coach for interviews and presentations.
