As of 13 August 2026, AI can only partly report a suspicious bank payment.
Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

What the alternative costsThe alternative is your bank's own fraud-reporting channel; Emma is an AI assistant across your UK accounts, but it does not replace the bank's reporting process.
If this goes wrong: you delay contacting the bank, disclose sensitive information in the wrong place or misunderstand what payment you are reporting.
What to actually do

Second choiceA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open your bank's official app or statement and record the payment date, amount, payee or description, and whether it was a card payment, bank transfer, direct debit or another type.
- Write down what you recognise, what you do not recognise and when you first noticed it, without copying passwords, PINs, one-time codes, full card numbers or full account details.
- Paste the prompt into a chatbot with only those non-sensitive facts filled in, and ask it to produce the missing-facts list and the short bank script.
- Compare every date, amount and payee in the draft with your current bank statement, deleting any assumption or detail the chatbot added.
- Open your bank's official app or website separately and use its current fraud or suspicious-payment reporting route, or call the official number shown there, rather than a number supplied by the chatbot.
- Send or read the checked script to the bank, complete its identity checks in the bank's own channel, and save the bank's reference, instructions and any deadline it gives you.
Prompt
Help me prepare to report a suspicious UK bank payment. Do not contact anyone, invent facts, identify the payment as fraud, or give legal or professional advice. Use only the information I provide. First list any missing facts I should obtain from my bank statement. Then draft a short, factual message or phone script for my bank. Include the payment date, amount, payee, payment type and why it looks suspicious, but use placeholders for any account number, card number, sort code, password, PIN, security answer or one-time code. Tell me which details must not be pasted into a chatbot. Separate facts from assumptions, and say clearly when I should use my bank's official app, website or telephone number instead of relying on this chat. My details are: [payment date] [amount and currency] [payee or description] [payment type, if known] [what I recognise or do not recognise] [what happened before and after I noticed it] [what my bank statement shows].
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
Hand it to a person
The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot access your bank account or confirm whether a payment was genuinely unauthorised.
- AI cannot provide your bank's current secure reporting route unless you check it against the bank's official app or website.
- AI cannot complete the bank's identity checks, freeze an account or investigate the payment.
- AI cannot decide whether a confusing payment is fraud, a forgotten purchase, a changed payee or a payment made by someone you authorised.
- AI cannot carry liability if delayed or inaccurate information causes a problem; your bank must handle the report and investigation.
What caps this at PARTLY: real time truth, stakes of error and private data access.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 1 |
| Effort delta | 1 |

FAQ
- Can AI report a suspicious bank payment for me?
- No. AI can organise the transaction facts and draft what to say, but you must report it through your bank's official app, website or telephone channel and complete its checks.
- What information should I give AI about a suspicious payment?
- Give only the payment date, amount, payee or description, payment type and why it looks unfamiliar. Do not paste passwords, PINs, one-time codes, security answers, full card numbers or full account details.
- Is it safe to use ChatGPT to report bank fraud?
- Use a chatbot only to prepare a factual checklist or script, not to make the report or handle security information. This is not professional advice; for a serious case, contact your bank's fraud team and consider a solicitor if you need legal help.
- What should I do if I see a payment I do not recognise?
- Check the payment details on your statement, then contact your bank promptly through the official route shown in its app, website or correspondence. Ask the bank what protective steps and evidence it needs, and keep its reference and instructions.
