YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can structure an exam answer.

This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

Can you do it?

What the alternative costsThe available tool data gives no price for a human tutor or another priced alternative.

If this goes wrong: you practise an incomplete or poorly prioritised structure and lose marks, but you can replace it after comparing it with the mark scheme.

What to actually do

  1. Hand it to a person

    The route this page recommends

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

  2. Do it yourself

    Second choice

A chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the official question paper, specification or mark scheme for the exam and identify the subject, level, exam board, command word and marks available.
    2. Copy the full question into the prompt, then add the time you expect to have and any assessment objectives or marking criteria.
    3. Gather the class notes, required texts, formula sheet, source extract or case study that the answer must use, and paste the relevant parts into the prompt.
    4. Paste the complete prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a structure rather than a finished answer.
    5. Compare each suggested section with the wording of the question and the official mark scheme, removing any point or quotation that is not supported by your materials.
    6. Write your own answer from the checked plan under timed conditions, then use the checklist to confirm that each paragraph answers the command word and covers the available marks.

    Prompt

Show me how to structure an answer to this exam question without writing the finished answer for me.

    Subject: [subject]
Exam level and board: [GCSE, A level, university course or other, plus board if known]
    Question: [paste the full question]
    Marks available: [number]
    Time available: [time]
Command word: [for example, explain, assess, compare or evaluate]
Assessment objectives or mark scheme: [paste them if available]
Relevant class notes or source material: [paste them if useful]

    Give me:
    1. What the question is asking me to do, including the key terms and command word.
    2. A structure matched to the number of marks and the time available.
    3. The purpose of each paragraph or section.
    4. The points, evidence, examples, calculations or quotations I should consider, using only the material I provide and clearly labelling anything that is missing.
    5. A short checklist I can use while writing.
    6. One brief example of how a paragraph could be organised, using placeholders rather than a complete answer.

Do not invent facts, quotations, case studies, sources or mark-scheme requirements. Do not write the full answer. If the question or mark scheme is incomplete, ask me what is missing before giving a confident subject-specific plan.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know which parts of your course your teacher has prioritised unless you provide the relevant notes, specification or mark scheme.
  • It can produce a tidy paragraph plan that does not contain enough accurate subject knowledge to earn the marks.
  • It cannot reliably judge the quality of an original interpretation, argument or line of reasoning without a suitable mark scheme or expert feedback.
  • It cannot replace timed writing practice, recall of subject content or learning how to apply evidence yourself.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity and verification cost.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT structure my exam answer?
Yes. Give it the full question, marks, command word, time limit and mark scheme or assessment objectives, then ask for a plan rather than a finished answer. Check the plan against the official criteria before using it.
Can AI tell me how many paragraphs to write in an exam?
It can suggest a sensible structure based on the marks and time available. It cannot know that a fixed number of paragraphs is required unless your exam board or teacher says so, so use the mark scheme to check the recommendation.
Is it cheating to use AI to structure an exam answer?
Using AI for revision or planning is usually different from using it during a closed-book exam, but your school, college or university may have its own rules. Do not submit AI-written work as your own where your institution prohibits it, and use AI to practise the method rather than memorise a fabricated answer.
Can AI improve my exam technique?
Yes, it can turn questions into plans, explain command words and generate checklists for timed practice. It cannot confirm that your subject knowledge is correct without reliable materials, so compare its guidance with your specification, mark scheme or teacher feedback.
