As of 13 August 2026, AI can summarise your customer survey responses.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

What the alternative costsCustomGPT is a no-code custom chatbot that can be built from your business content with citations.
If this goes wrong, the summary can hide a minority complaint or mistake repeated comments for broad customer demand, leading you to prioritise the wrong change.

How to actually do it
- Export the survey results from your survey platform as a spreadsheet or text file, keeping the question text, response text and any non-identifying segments.
- Remove names, email addresses, phone numbers, order numbers and other personal identifiers before opening a chatbot.
- Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and paste the prompt, replacing the bracketed fields with the survey purpose, audience, collection period, questions and response data.
- Ask the chatbot to calculate counts only where the supplied data supports them, and to label interpretations, limitations and suggested actions separately from customer statements.
- Copy the summary into a working document and sample responses from every reported theme, comparing each quoted excerpt and count with the original export.
- Ask a colleague who understands the survey and customer context to check whether minority views, duplicate responses, sampling limits and important complaints have been represented.
- Send the checked summary to the relevant product, service or customer-care owner, keeping the original export alongside it as the evidence record.
Prompt
Summarise the customer survey data below for a UK business team. Survey purpose: [WHAT THE SURVEY WAS TRYING TO LEARN] Audience and collection period: [WHO RESPONDED AND WHEN] Questions: [PASTE THE QUESTIONS] Responses: [PASTE OR ATTACH THE RESPONSES] Useful segments, if available: [FOR EXAMPLE PRODUCT, REGION, CUSTOMER TYPE OR PLAN] Remove or ignore names, email addresses, phone numbers, order numbers and other identifying details. Do not infer personal characteristics that are not supplied. Do not invent responses, counts or explanations. Produce: 1. A short executive summary with the main findings. 2. The main positive themes and the main negative themes. 3. For each theme, give its response count if it can be calculated, otherwise say that no reliable count is available. 4. For each theme, include up to three short verbatim excerpts, clearly labelled as excerpts, and do not alter their meaning. 5. Separate direct customer statements from your interpretation. 6. Identify conflicting or minority views rather than smoothing them into the majority view. 7. Highlight unanswered questions, possible sampling bias and duplicate or low-quality responses. 8. Suggest practical follow-up questions or actions, clearly labelled as suggestions rather than findings. Use plain British English, headings and a table where useful. Finish with a section called "Checks for the team" listing the source responses or calculations we should inspect before acting on the summary.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot decide whether a recurring comment reflects a serious issue, a vocal minority or a customer segment that matters disproportionately.
- AI cannot correct biased sampling or make an unrepresentative survey look representative.
- AI can merge different complaints into one theme when their causes and remedies are different.
- AI cannot take responsibility for a product or service decision based on the summary.
- Uploading raw responses can expose customer information if you have not removed identifiers and checked your organisation's data rules.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, verification cost and consent and privacy.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 1 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 8 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT summarise customer survey responses?
- Yes. It can group responses into themes, condense repeated comments, quote supporting examples and produce a report from pasted or uploaded data. Check the reported themes and counts against the original responses before using the summary to make decisions.
- How do I get AI to analyse customer feedback?
- Give it the survey questions, responses, purpose and any useful non-identifying segments, then ask it to separate findings from interpretation and suggestions. Tell it not to invent counts, smooth over minority views or infer information that is not in the data.
- Can AI find themes in survey responses?
- Yes, AI can produce a useful first grouping of repeated topics and sentiments. It can still combine distinct issues or miss an important minority complaint, so compare each theme with sampled source responses and ask a colleague to challenge the grouping.
- Is it safe to upload customer survey responses to AI?
- Only after removing direct identifiers and checking your organisation's rules for using customer data with the chosen service. Do not upload information you do not have permission to process, and keep the original data separate from the generated summary.
