As of 13 August 2026, AI can turn your experience into STAR interview answers.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

If this goes wrong: the answer sounds polished but vague or includes a detail you cannot defend, and you can correct it before the interview.

The route this page recommends
A chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the job advert and copy the responsibilities, essential criteria and competency wording into a document.
- Choose three or four real experiences that show relevant skills, then write down what happened, what you personally did and what changed as a result.
- Add specific evidence you can defend, such as the scale of the work, the process you followed or the outcome, without estimating anything you cannot support.
- Paste the job advert, one interview question and one experience into the prompt, then ask the chatbot to draft one STAR answer at a time.
- Replace every [DETAIL NEEDED] marker and remove any claim that does not match your actual experience, records or memory.
- Read each answer aloud and shorten phrases you would not normally use, while keeping the Situation, Task, Action and Result structure.
- Practise answering the follow-up questions without looking at the draft, then amend the answers where your spoken explanation differs from the written version.
Prompt
Turn my experience into STAR interview answers for the role below. Use only facts I provide and do not invent figures, responsibilities, outcomes, names or tools. For each answer, label Situation, Task, Action and Result. Keep the Action section focused on what I personally did, not what the team did. Make the wording natural to say aloud in a UK interview, specific rather than full of generic strengths, and concise enough to deliver without reading. Where my evidence is incomplete, write [DETAIL NEEDED] and ask one precise follow-up question instead of guessing. After drafting, list the claims I must verify against my own records and give me three likely follow-up questions for each answer. Job description: [PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION] Likely interview question or competency: [PASTE QUESTION] My experience and notes: [PASTE YOUR EXPERIENCE]
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know which experience best represents you unless you provide enough context about the situation and the result.
- It turns weak or vague evidence into polished wording without making the underlying example stronger.
- It cannot decide which personal details are safe or sensible to share with a particular interviewer.
- It cannot reproduce your natural speaking style reliably, so an unpractised answer can sound memorised.
- It cannot guarantee that your example matches the employer's scoring criteria beyond the wording in the job advert.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity and taste.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT write STAR interview answers?
- Yes. It can organise your real examples into Situation, Task, Action and Result sections and tailor them to the job description. Check every fact and practise saying the result in your own words.
- How do I get AI to write better STAR answers?
- Give it one competency question, the relevant job advert wording and one specific experience at a time. Tell it to use only your facts, focus on your personal actions, mark missing details instead of guessing and keep the answer natural to say aloud.
- Can AI invent things in my interview answers?
- Yes. It can add plausible figures, responsibilities or outcomes when your notes are incomplete. Ask it to mark missing information, then compare every claim with your own records and remove anything you could not defend in the interview.
- How long should a STAR interview answer be?
- There is no single correct length for every question. Include enough context to explain the situation and task, spend most of the answer on what you did, and finish with a specific result and what you learned if that is relevant.
