PARTLY

As of 12 August 2026, AI can only partly write your CV.

Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

Can you do it?

5 minutesto a draft.

15 minutesto something you’d act on.

Cost, all in£0

Skill needednone

Who has to check ityou

What the alternative costsA professional CV writer commonly charges £100 to £400.

If this goes wrong: a fabricated or inflated line survives into an interview, and you defend a sentence you did not write to someone who has read ten thousand CVs.

What to actually do

  1. Do it yourself

    The route this page recommends

A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.

    Prompt

Rewrite my CV below for the job advert that follows. Use only facts that appear in my CV, invent nothing and inflate nothing. Keep it to two pages, lead each role with what changed because I was there, match the advert's own vocabulary where it is honest to do so, and list separately anything in the advert my CV does not evidence, so I can decide what to do about the gap.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • Given thin input it invents: achievements, percentages and duties appear that you never claimed, and they read plausibly enough to survive your own tired proofread.
  • Every draft converges on the same confident, adjective-heavy voice, and recruiters now read that voice as a template.
  • It buries the unusual thing. The odd job, the career gap, the sideways move: the details a human would ask about are exactly what it smooths away.

What caps this at PARTLY: context depth and taste.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT write my CV?
Partly. The answer here is PARTLY. It structures and tightens a CV well when you feed it your real history, but given gaps it invents, and its voice converges on a template recruiters recognise. Draft with it, then verify every line against what you actually did.
Is it cheating to use AI for my CV?
No. A CV was always a drafted, edited document, and employers care whether it is true, not who typed it. What crosses the line is submitting claims you cannot defend: every fact stays yours to verify, because the interview questions land on you.
What should I not let AI do to my CV?
Do not let it fill gaps. No invented metrics, no duties you never held, no smoothing over the career break you will be asked about. And do not let it delete the unusual detail that makes you interviewable: the odd path is often the interview's best question.
How much does a professional CV writer cost?
Commonly £100 to £400. The free route is a model plus your own verification pass, and the National Careers Service publishes free CV guidance with advisers behind it. What you are paying a writer for is judgement about emphasis, which is also the part AI does worst.
