As of 12 August 2026, AI can write your job advert.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

What the alternative costsA recruitment agency writes the advert inside a placement fee commonly 15 to 20 percent of first-year salary; job boards charge to post, not to write.
If this goes wrong: a phrase that reads as age, sex or disability discrimination goes out under your company's name, or a generic advert brings you a hundred generic applications to sift.

The route this page recommends
A chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
Prompt
Draft a job advert from the role notes below. State only requirements that are genuinely required, include the salary range, name what the person will actually do in their first three months, and avoid cliches. Then list any phrase in your own draft that could read as discrimination under UK equality law, with a neutral rewording for each. Role notes: office manager, small accountancy firm in Stevenage, £28,000 to £32,000, three days a week on site, Xero experience useful, must handle client calls.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
Use a tool built for this
Second choicePurpose-built software does the mechanical share of this.
Workable Job Description Generator
Free
A free generator that produces a first draft from a job title with no sign-up: a faster blank page, which is the honest size of what a generator contributes.
Manatal
An applicant tracking system whose AI drafts the advert from the role record, at $19 per user per month (Professional): honest when hiring is a pipeline you run monthly, not a one-off.
Hand it to a person
The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- Phrases like recent graduate, energetic or digital native slip in and can read as age discrimination under the Equality Act; GOV.UK's recruitment guidance names exactly this trap.
- It inflates the role: essential-requirements lists grow until the honest candidate self-deselects and the confident one applies anyway.
- Every advert converges on the same voice, and the candidates you most want have read that voice a hundred times this month.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: context depth.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 1 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 1 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 8 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can AI write our job advert?
- Yes. The answer here is YES. Given honest role notes, salary, location, what the job actually involves, a model drafts a clear advert in minutes, and you can verify it in one read. The two jobs left for you: check every claim is true, and check the wording for discrimination risk.
- Is it legal to use AI to write job adverts in the UK?
- Using AI is fine; publishing a discriminatory advert is not, whoever wrote it. Adverts must not state or imply discrimination, and phrases like recent graduate can count as age discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. The employer is accountable for every word, which is why this answer keeps the final read human.
- What makes an AI job advert bad?
- The defaults. Left alone, a model pads the requirements list, writes in a voice candidates have learned to skip, and reaches for phrases that carry discrimination risk. Feed it real role notes, a salary range and the first three months' work, and cut everything it invented.
- Should we put the salary in the advert?
- Yes. The range is a fact only you hold, a model cannot invent it, and an advert without it invites applications from people whose expectations you already know you cannot meet. Adding the real range is the single edit that most improves an AI draft.
