As of 13 August 2026, AI can check your application against a job advert.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

What the alternative costsA purpose-built alternative is Teal, an AI job-search workspace for CV tailoring and application tracking.
If this goes wrong: you submit wording that matches the advert but overstates your experience, so you need to correct the application before sending it.
What to actually do
Do it yourself
The route this page recommends
A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the full job advert and copy the complete text, including the essential criteria, desirable criteria, duties and application instructions.
- Gather the version of your CV and any supporting statement, cover letter or application answers that you intend to submit.
- Remove irrelevant personal details, then paste the advert and application into the prompt under the two labelled sections.
- Ask the chatbot to produce the requirement-by-requirement table and to mark unsupported or unclear points instead of filling them in.
- Compare every quoted match with the original advert and your own employment records, qualifications and examples, deleting any suggestion that you cannot substantiate.
- Make the five priority changes yourself, then read the complete application against the advert once more before submitting it through the employer's stated application route.
Prompt
Check my application against the job advert below. Use only the information I provide and do not invent experience, qualifications, results, responsibilities or motivations. Job advert: [PASTE THE FULL JOB ADVERT] My application: [PASTE MY CV, SUPPORTING STATEMENT, COVER LETTER OR APPLICATION ANSWERS] Produce: 1. A table listing each essential and desirable requirement from the advert. 2. For each requirement, mark it as clearly evidenced, partly evidenced, not evidenced or unclear. 3. Quote the exact wording or section of my application that supports each assessment. 4. Identify important requirements that my application does not address. 5. Suggest specific edits or additions, but only where they are supported by my supplied information. 6. List any claims that sound vague, exaggerated or impossible to verify. 7. Give me five priority changes in order of importance. Do not rewrite the whole application unless I ask. Do not assume that a missing detail is true. Keep the employer's wording separate from my evidence, and tell me when the advert is ambiguous.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know which of your real experiences is most persuasive to this employer without context you have not supplied.
- AI cannot turn a missing qualification or example into genuine evidence.
- AI may treat a keyword match as meaningful when a recruiter would see that the experience is too shallow or from the wrong setting.
- AI cannot judge the employer's unstated preferences, internal candidate or likely reaction to your tone.
- AI cannot take responsibility for an inaccurate claim in the application.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, context depth and taste.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT match my CV to a job advert?
- Yes. Paste both documents and ask for a requirement-by-requirement table showing the evidence, gaps and unclear points. Check every suggested match against your actual experience before changing the CV.
- Can AI tell me if I am a good fit for a job?
- It can assess how clearly your supplied evidence matches the advert. It cannot know the strength of the other applicants, the employer's unstated preferences or whether you would perform well in the role.
- Can AI tailor my application to a job advert?
- Yes, it can identify relevant evidence and suggest more direct wording. Tell it not to invent achievements or qualifications, and keep any edit that you could defend in an interview.
- Is it safe to use AI to check a job application?
- It is generally suitable for comparing your wording with a public job advert, but do not let it create facts or disclose information that is unnecessary for the task. You remain responsible for the final application and should verify every claim.
