As of 13 August 2026, AI can check your CV against a job description.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

What the alternative costsA purpose-built alternative is Teal, an AI job-search workspace for CV tailoring and application tracking; no alternative price is provided in the available source data.
If this goes wrong: you follow a weak match report or over-tailor your CV, but you can correct it before sending the application.
What to actually do
Do it yourself
The route this page recommends
A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the original job advert and copy the complete job description, including the essential criteria, desirable criteria and application instructions.
- Open your current CV and remove sensitive information you do not need to share, such as your address, telephone number and references.
- Paste the prompt into an AI chat, replace the two bracketed sections with the full job description and CV, and submit it.
- Read the match table from top to bottom and compare every quoted CV claim with your actual CV and every requirement with the original advert.
- Amend only wording that is truthful and supported by your experience, then save the tailored CV and check that it still contains no invented claims before submitting the application.
Prompt
Compare my CV with the job description below for a UK job application. Do not invent experience, qualifications, achievements, employers, dates, responsibilities or results. Separate the job description into essential requirements, desirable requirements, responsibilities and implied requirements. For each requirement, show whether my CV provides direct evidence, partial evidence or no evidence, and quote or closely identify the relevant CV wording. Then provide: 1) the five strongest matches, 2) the most important gaps, 3) factual CV changes that would make relevant evidence easier to find, without adding new claims, 4) keywords I could use only where they accurately describe my experience, 5) questions I should answer before applying, and 6) a short overall assessment that does not predict whether I will get an interview. Flag any requirement that is ambiguous or cannot be judged from these documents. Treat UK spelling as the default. CV: [PASTE YOUR CV HERE] JOB DESCRIPTION: [PASTE THE FULL JOB DESCRIPTION HERE]

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know which parts of your experience a particular hiring manager will value most.
- AI cannot turn an absent qualification or experience into evidence you genuinely have.
- AI cannot reliably interpret vague requirements such as cultural fit, potential or senior presence.
- AI may overvalue repeated keywords and undervalue relevant experience expressed in different language.
- AI cannot tell you whether a career move is right for your circumstances or priorities.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity and context depth.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can AI compare my CV to a job description?
- Yes. It can extract requirements, map them to evidence in your CV and identify gaps, provided you supply the complete documents and check the result.
- Will AI tell me if I am a good fit for a job?
- It can give you a structured estimate of how closely your stated experience matches the advert. It cannot predict the employer's decision or judge factors that are not written down.
- Can AI tailor my CV to a job description?
- Yes, it can reorganise and sharpen wording around requirements that your CV already supports. It must not add qualifications, achievements or responsibilities that you do not have.
- Is it safe to upload my CV to AI?
- Use a service whose privacy terms you have read, and remove contact details and other information that is not needed for the comparison. Do not upload another person's personal data without their permission.
