YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can tailor your CV to a job description.

Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

Can you do it?

5 minutesto a draft.

30 minutesto something you’d act on.

What the alternative costsTeal is a purpose-built AI job-search workspace for CV tailoring and application tracking.

If this goes wrong: the CV becomes generic or contains an exaggerated claim, which you can correct before sending it.

What to actually do

  1. Do it yourself

    The route this page recommends

A chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the vacancy and copy the complete job description, including essential criteria, desirable criteria, responsibilities and named qualifications or software.
    2. Open your current CV and remove information you do not want to share, then copy the remaining text into the prompt under MY CURRENT CV.
    3. Add concrete constraints under MY CONSTRAINTS, such as the target length, the type of role, and any experience or qualifications that must remain prominent.
    4. Paste the completed prompt into a chatbot and ask it to produce the suitability gaps, tailored CV and change log in the specified order.
    5. Compare every employer, job title, date, qualification, responsibility and achievement in the draft against your original CV, deleting anything that is not supported.
    6. Compare the change log with the job description and restore relevant evidence that the draft omitted, while leaving unsupported requirements marked as gaps.
    7. Paste the checked CV into the application form or save it in the requested file format, then read it once as an interview question list so you can defend every claim.

    Prompt

Tailor my CV to the job description below for a UK application.

    JOB DESCRIPTION:
    [Paste the full job description]

    MY CURRENT CV:
    [Paste your current CV]

    MY CONSTRAINTS:
[Add any requirements such as maximum length, preferred layout, industries to emphasise, or experience to leave out]

    Instructions:
    1. Use only facts stated in my CV. Do not invent achievements, responsibilities, qualifications, employers, dates, software, metrics or outcomes.
    2. Identify the main requirements in the job description and map each one to evidence in my CV.
    3. Rewrite the professional summary and relevant experience bullets so they are specific to this role, clear and concise, and suitable for a UK employer.
    4. Keep claims accurate and defensible in an interview. Preserve correct job titles, employer names and dates.
    5. Do not copy whole phrases from the job description unless they are standard terms or names of qualifications, tools or processes.
    6. Keep relevant experience that does not match a listed keyword if it shows useful transferable skills.
    7. Flag every important requirement for which my CV provides no evidence instead of pretending I meet it.
    8. Return the result in this order: suitability gaps, a tailored CV, and a change log showing what you changed and which job requirement each change addresses.
    9. Use plain British English and avoid buzzwords, inflated adjectives and claims such as highly accomplished unless my CV directly supports them.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know which parts of your experience are genuinely strongest unless you explain the context behind them.
  • It cannot turn missing experience into credible evidence and may make a weak match sound stronger than it is.
  • It cannot decide whether a company's culture, role or working pattern suits your priorities from a job description alone.
  • It may select keywords at the expense of a natural voice, so you still need to choose wording you would use in an interview.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity and taste.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT tailor my CV to a job description?
Yes. Give it your current CV and the full job description, and it can identify relevant requirements and rewrite the CV around evidence you already have. Check every factual claim before sending it.
How do I get AI to tailor my CV?
Paste your CV and the complete job description into a chatbot with instructions to use only your facts, flag missing evidence and explain each change. Include constraints such as length, tone and the experience you want emphasised.
Will AI add fake experience to my CV?
It can invent or exaggerate details, especially when the job description asks for experience your CV does not show. Tell it to invent nothing, then compare every claim, date and achievement with your original CV.
Is it worth using AI to tailor a CV for each job?
Yes, when the job descriptions differ and you check the result yourself. AI can handle the first pass of matching requirements to evidence, but it cannot decide which claims best represent your real strengths or whether the role suits you.
