As of 13 August 2026, AI can compare your email marketing with your competitors' email marketing.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.
Can you do it?

What the alternative costsA manual comparison using a spreadsheet is the alternative; this assessment does not assign it a price.
If this goes wrong: you copy a competitor's apparent tactic without knowing its audience, economics or results, and waste campaign time or damage your positioning.
What to actually do

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

The distant thirdA chat interface, power-user skill, and roughly 1 hour until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- 1. Open your email platform and export the campaign results for the period you want to compare, including delivery, opens, clicks, unsubscribes, conversions and revenue where those fields exist.
- 2. Gather the actual emails you sent, including subject lines, preheaders, body copy, links, images and any audience or campaign labels.
- 3. Subscribe to each competitor's public mailing list using an address you are permitted to use, save the emails you receive with the date received, and remove any personal information not needed for the comparison.
- 4. Put your campaign figures in a spreadsheet with one campaign per row, then label each competitor email with its source, date received, apparent purpose and any information that is directly observable.
- 5. Paste or attach the spreadsheet and email examples to the prompt, fill in your business context and objectives, and ask the chatbot to produce the comparison, evidence table and test plan.
- 6. Check every factual observation against the original email or spreadsheet row, delete recommendations based on unavailable competitor data, and ask a colleague who knows your customer and commercial objectives to challenge the priorities.
- 7. Choose tests that fit your existing email platform, write down the control, variant and metrics, and send only the approved test rather than publishing the AI's recommendations unchanged.
Prompt
Compare my email marketing with the competitor emails and campaign data supplied below. My business and audience: [DESCRIBE THE BUSINESS, OFFER, TARGET CUSTOMERS AND UK MARKET] My objectives: [STATE THE COMMERCIAL OR EMAIL OBJECTIVES] My email campaign data: [PASTE OR ATTACH A TABLE WITH CAMPAIGN NAME, DATE, AUDIENCE, SUBJECT LINE, PREHEADER, SEND PURPOSE, CALL TO ACTION, DELIVERED, OPENS, CLICKS, UNSUBSCRIBES, CONVERSIONS AND REVENUE WHERE AVAILABLE] My email examples: [PASTE OR ATTACH THE EMAILS, INCLUDING SUBJECT LINE, PREHEADER, BODY COPY, LINKS AND IMAGES OR SCREENSHOTS] Competitor names and public sources: [LIST EACH COMPETITOR AND PASTE OR ATTACH THEIR PUBLIC EMAILS, SIGN-UP EMAILS OR SCREENSHOTS, WITH THE SOURCE AND DATE RECEIVED] Competitor campaign data, if any: [PASTE ONLY DATA I AM ENTITLED TO USE] Produce the result in this order: 1. A like-for-like comparison table covering send frequency, subject lines, preheaders, offer, audience clues, message, tone, design, call to action, urgency, personalisation and mobile readability. Mark unavailable information as unknown. 2. Patterns in my campaigns, supported by the supplied figures and examples. 3. Patterns in each competitor's public emails, with the exact source email or passage for every factual observation. 4. Differences that are genuinely evidenced, separating observation from interpretation. 5. Three opportunities for my email programme and three risks, ranked by likely business relevance rather than novelty. 6. A practical test plan with a hypothesis, audience, control, variant, primary metric, guardrail metric and decision rule for each test. Do not invent benchmark figures. Do not claim to know competitor open rates, clicks, revenue, segmentation or strategy unless I supplied evidence. Do not infer customer preferences from email design alone. Do not copy competitor wording. Flag missing data, possible selection bias and comparisons that are not like for like. Keep UK spelling and clearly label recommendations as recommendations, not facts.

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot reveal a competitor's private open rates, click rates, revenue, customer segments or internal strategy.
- AI cannot tell whether a competitor's visible tactic worked, because public emails show the treatment but usually not the result.
- AI treats the material you provide as the evidence; a biased sample of emails produces a biased comparison.
- AI cannot decide which opportunity fits your margins, brand position, customer relationships and operational capacity without your judgement.
- AI can identify wording and design patterns, but it cannot replace a controlled test in your own audience.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: private data access, judgement under ambiguity and verification cost.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 1 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 8 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can AI analyse my competitors' email campaigns?
- Yes, if you provide the competitor emails or other public material and your own campaign data. It can compare subjects, offers, calls to action, frequency and observable patterns, but it cannot know private performance results unless you supply them.
- Can AI see how well my competitors' emails perform?
- No. Public emails reveal what a competitor sent, not its opens, clicks, sales or return on investment. Treat any performance claim without supplied evidence as speculation.
- Can AI tell me what emails I should send?
- It can turn the comparison into possible campaigns and test plans. You still need to choose ideas that fit your customers, offer, brand, consent records and commercial constraints, then test them in your own email platform.
- Is it safe to upload my email marketing data to AI?
- Only upload data you are allowed to share, and remove customer names, email addresses, purchase details and other unnecessary personal data. Check the chatbot provider's handling terms and your organisation's policy before uploading campaign exports.
