As of 13 August 2026, AI can create STAR examples from your work experience.
Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

What the alternative costsA purpose-built interview tool such as Final Round AI provides AI mock interviews and live interview preparation.
If this goes wrong: the example contains invented detail or sounds rehearsed, and the interviewer doubts your evidence for the competency.

Do it yourself
Second choiceA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the job advert and copy the exact competency, essential criterion or interview question you need to answer.
- Gather two or three real work situations that fit it, including what happened, your specific responsibility, the actions you took and the result.
- Add any figures, dates, tools, constraints or feedback you genuinely remember, and mark anything uncertain as unknown rather than estimating it.
- Paste the job question and your notes into the prompt, then ask the chatbot to produce the long answer, short answer and follow-up questions.
- Compare every drafted claim with your CV, emails, project records or memory, replace each [DETAIL NEEDED] marker, and delete anything you cannot defend as true.
- Say the answer aloud and shorten or reword sentences that you would not naturally use, then practise answering the follow-up questions without reading the script.
Prompt
Create STAR interview examples from the work experience below for the job and competency described. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent figures, responsibilities, customers, outcomes or emotions. If a key detail is missing, write [DETAIL NEEDED] instead of guessing. Job title: [JOB TITLE] Competency or interview question: [COMPETENCY OR QUESTION] My work experience: [PASTE YOUR NOTES, CV BULLETS OR A DESCRIPTION OF THE REAL SITUATION] Produce: 1. One natural spoken answer of about two minutes using Situation, Task, Action and Result headings. 2. A shorter version that can be delivered in about one minute. 3. Three likely follow-up questions and factual answers based only on my notes. 4. A list of every statement that needs me to confirm or add a detail. Make the answer specific and plain. Put most of the detail on what I personally did, why I chose those actions, and what changed afterwards. Do not add generic claims such as "excellent communication" unless the example proves them. Keep the wording close to how a UK job candidate would speak, and do not make it sound memorised.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
Hand it to a person
The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot know which achievement best represents your judgement unless you give it enough context about the situation and the competency.
- It cannot supply a genuine result when your notes contain no outcome, so it may leave a weak example or expose the missing detail.
- It cannot tell whether the finished answer sounds like you in a real interview until you say it aloud or ask another person for feedback.
- It cannot decide how much confidential information from a former employer is appropriate to disclose.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, context depth and taste.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 1 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 9 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT turn my experience into STAR answers?
- Yes. Give it a real situation, your responsibility, the actions you took and the result, and it can structure those facts into a spoken STAR answer. Tell it to mark missing information instead of filling gaps.
- Will AI invent details in my STAR example?
- It can, especially when your notes do not include a clear result or enough context. Instruct it to use only your facts, then check every claim against your own experience before practising the answer.
- How do I make an AI STAR answer sound natural?
- Ask for plain spoken wording and a shorter version, then say it aloud rather than memorising the draft. Keep the parts that sound like you and replace phrases you would not use in a real interview.
- Can AI choose the best STAR example for an interview question?
- It can compare examples against the wording of the question and suggest a good fit. You still need to judge which example shows your contribution most clearly and which details you can defend under follow-up questions.
