As of 13 August 2026, AI can prepare your job interview answers.

Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

What the alternative costsFinal Round AI is a purpose-built alternative offering AI mock interviews and live interview preparation.

If this goes wrong: your answers sound generic or contain claims you cannot support, and you perform poorly in the interview.

What to actually do

  1. Use a tool built for this

    The route this page recommends

  2. Do it yourself

    Second choice

A chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the current job advert and copy the full job description, including the essential and desirable criteria, into a document.
    2. Open your CV and a separate note, then gather three to five real examples from work, study, volunteering or personal projects that show relevant actions and results.
    3. For each example, write the situation, what you personally did, the result and any figure or evidence you can defend, without filling gaps from memory with guesses.
    4. Paste the job title, company name, job description, CV, examples and known interview details into the prompt, then run it in a chatbot.
    5. Compare every drafted answer with your CV and examples, delete invented or exaggerated claims, and replace generic wording with the way you actually speak.
    6. Say each answer aloud, shorten anything you cannot deliver naturally, and practise follow-up questions using the same verified examples.
    7. Save the final answers and the five questions for the interviewer, then check the company name, role title and all factual details before the interview.

    Prompt

Act as an interview coach for this UK job application. Use only the information I provide and invent no employers, qualifications, responsibilities, achievements, figures or dates. Read the job description and my background, identify the skills and evidence the interviewer is most likely to test, then produce: 1. the ten most likely interview questions, 2. a strong but natural draft answer to each question, 3. the specific evidence from my background used in each answer, and 4. one short follow-up question I might be asked. Use STAR structure where it fits, but do not force it onto straightforward questions. Keep the answers conversational and concise enough to say aloud. Do not claim that I did anything unless it appears in my background. Mark any question where my evidence is weak and suggest what real example I should find, without inventing one. Use British English and avoid corporate clichés. Finish with five questions I can ask the interviewer.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot supply a convincing personal example when your experience does not contain one.
  • AI cannot know which parts of your story you can deliver confidently under pressure.
  • AI turns thin evidence into polished wording, which can make an answer sound stronger than your actual experience.
  • AI cannot judge the interviewer’s reactions, the room’s tone or when to stop talking.
  • AI cannot make a rehearsed answer sound like you unless you edit it and practise it aloud.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: context depth and taste.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT write my interview answers?
Yes. Give it the job description, your CV and real examples, and ask it to draft answers without inventing facts. You still need to edit the wording and practise saying each answer aloud.
How do I use AI to prepare for a job interview?
Paste the job description and your background into a chatbot and ask it to identify likely questions, structure your evidence and flag weak examples. Check every answer against your actual experience before rehearsing it.
Can AI help me answer competency-based interview questions?
Yes. It can map your real examples to competency questions and organise them using the STAR structure. It cannot create a credible situation or result that you have not experienced.
Will AI-generated interview answers sound fake?
They can if you repeat the draft unchanged, especially when it uses polished corporate phrases or claims you would not normally make. Rewrite each answer in your own words and say it aloud until it sounds like a clear account of something you actually did.
