As of 13 August 2026, AI can run a mock job interview.
Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

If this goes wrong: you practise answers that sound polished but do not fit the role or your real experience, which you can correct before the interview.
What to actually do
Do it yourself
The route this page recommends
A chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the job advert and your current CV, then copy the full job description and your factual experience summary into separate notes.
- Paste the prompt into a chatbot and replace every bracketed slot with the role, employer, interview type, length and areas you want to practise.
- Answer each question aloud before typing a short version into the chat, using real examples and saying when you do not have relevant experience.
- Continue until the requested interview length is reached, then ask the chatbot for its assessment and stronger versions of weak answers.
- Compare every suggested answer with your CV and actual experience, remove any invented or exaggerated claim, and practise the final answers aloud without memorising them word for word.
Prompt
Run a realistic mock job interview for me. Role: [JOB TITLE] Employer: [EMPLOYER NAME] Job description: [PASTE THE FULL JOB DESCRIPTION] My CV or experience summary: [PASTE YOUR CV OR A FACTUAL SUMMARY] Interview type: [FOR EXAMPLE, COMPETENCY, TECHNICAL, STRENGTHS-BASED, CASE, OR MIXED] Interview length: [FOR EXAMPLE, 30 MINUTES] Areas I want to practise: [PASTE ANY CONCERNS OR TOPICS] Act as the interviewer, not a coach. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. Use the job description to choose relevant questions, including follow-up questions when my answer is vague or misses evidence. Cover motivation, role-specific skills and competency examples where relevant. Do not invent facts about me, the employer or the role. If information is missing, ask me rather than filling the gap. After the interview, give me: 1. A concise assessment of each answer against the job requirements. 2. The strongest evidence I gave and the main gaps. 3. Specific improvements to structure, clarity and relevance. 4. A stronger version of any weak answer using only facts I provided. 5. Three follow-up questions I should practise next. Use plain UK English. Distinguish between a factual problem and a style preference. Do not claim to know what the employer will decide.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot reproduce the pressure, interruptions or personal manner of the actual interviewer.
- AI cannot know which parts of your personality or experience will build trust with a particular panel.
- Its feedback on confidence, warmth and credibility is an approximation unless you provide an audio or video recording and interpret the result yourself.
- It can make a polished answer sound stronger while quietly moving it beyond what your real experience supports.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: judgement under ambiguity, relationship and taste.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 2 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 10 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT do a mock interview?
- Yes. It can ask questions one at a time, follow up on vague answers and critique your responses against a job description. It cannot reproduce the exact pressure or judgement of a real interviewer.
- How do I get AI to interview me?
- Give it the full job description, your CV or factual experience summary, the interview format and the areas you want to practise. Tell it to act as the interviewer, ask one question at a time, wait for your answer and give feedback only after the interview.
- Is AI good for interview practice?
- Yes, for repeated practice and structured feedback on relevance, clarity and evidence. Check every suggested answer against your real experience, because AI can make an answer sound convincing while adding claims you cannot defend.
- What is the best AI tool for mock interviews?
- Final Round AI is a purpose-built option for AI mock interviews and live interview preparation. A general chatbot is enough for a basic practice session, while a specialist tool may offer a more focused interview workflow.
