YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can write a cover letter for a specific job.

Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

Can you do it?

What the alternative costsResume.io is an AI-assisted CV and cover letter builder with ATS checks.

If this goes wrong: the letter sounds generic or contains a claim you cannot support, and you can correct it before sending.

What to actually do

  1. Do it yourself

    The route this page recommends

A chat interface, no skill needed, and roughly 15 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the full job advert and copy the responsibilities, essential criteria, employer name and application instructions into a document.
    2. Open your current CV and copy its factual contents into the prompt, removing private details you do not want to share with the chatbot.
    3. Write one or two truthful sentences about why this employer or role interests you, using a detail from the employer's own website or the job advert.
    4. Paste the advert, CV and reason into the prompt and ask the chatbot to draft the letter and its factual check-list.
    5. Compare every achievement, job title, qualification, date and employer detail in the draft with your CV and the advert, replace generic wording with your own voice, then save or send the final letter according to the application instructions.

    Prompt

Write a tailored cover letter for the job described below.

    Job description:
[PASTE THE FULL JOB ADVERT HERE]

    My CV:
    [PASTE YOUR CV HERE]

Employer research or my genuine reason for applying:
[PASTE ONE OR TWO TRUE DETAILS HERE, OR WRITE "NONE"]

Use only facts stated in my CV, the job description, or the employer research. Invent nothing, including achievements, qualifications, dates, responsibilities, employers, company facts or reasons for applying. If information is missing, leave it out rather than guessing.

Write a concise one-page letter in plain British English. Address the hiring manager by name only if a name is provided. Match the employer's role and wording without copying whole phrases from the advert. Show how two or three specific examples from my experience meet the most important requirements. Do not list my entire work history. Avoid clichés, exaggerated enthusiasm, unsupported adjectives, corporate jargon and claims that I am a perfect fit. Do not mention AI or the fact that you were given my CV. End with a straightforward invitation to discuss the role.

After the letter, add a short factual check-list identifying each claim that I must verify against my CV or the advert before sending.

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know your genuine reason for wanting this employer unless you provide it.
  • AI cannot judge whether the finished letter sounds like you or fits the organisation's unwritten culture.
  • AI may turn a modest CV detail into an achievement that the evidence does not support.
  • AI cannot know whether the employer has changed its priorities beyond the information in the advert and research you provide.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: taste and context depth.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT write a cover letter for a specific job?
Yes. Give it the full job advert and your CV, then check every factual claim against those documents before sending. Add one genuine reason for wanting the employer, because the model cannot supply that honestly on its own.
Should I use AI to write a cover letter?
Yes, if you use it for a tailored first draft rather than submitting its default wording unchanged. Keep the facts accurate, remove claims you could not defend in an interview and make the final tone sound like you.
How do I make an AI cover letter specific to the job?
Paste the complete job advert and ask the model to connect two or three real examples from your CV to the advert's most important requirements. Supply a truthful reason for wanting that employer and tell the model to invent nothing.
Can employers tell if a cover letter was written by AI?
They may notice generic phrases, exaggerated enthusiasm or a tone that does not match your application. Rewrite the draft in your own voice and check that every detail is accurate and relevant to the specific job.
