As of 13 August 2026, AI can write your CV from scratch.
Most people should hand this to a purpose-built tool.

What the alternative costsTeal is an AI job-search workspace for CV tailoring and application tracking, rather than a human CV-writing service.
If this goes wrong: the CV sounds generic or contains an invented achievement, and you may lose an application before spotting the problem.
What to actually do

Do it yourself
Second choiceA chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.
How to actually do it
- Open the job advert and copy the full text, including the role requirements and essential criteria, into a new document.
- Gather your previous CVs, employment dates, job titles, qualification records and any notes showing responsibilities, projects or results.
- Paste the job advert and your information into the prompt, replacing each bracketed section and leaving unknown facts blank.
- Ask the chatbot to produce the CV and the separate list of points needing confirmation, then copy the draft into a document you can edit.
- Compare every employer, job title, date, qualification, skill and achievement in the draft with your records, deleting anything you cannot prove or explain in an interview.
- Compare the skills and evidence against the job advert, then replace generic bullets with your own specific examples and correct any wording that does not sound like you.
- Run a final spelling and layout check in the document, save the CV with a clear filename, and send it only after confirming that the contact details and target role are correct.
Prompt
Write a UK CV from the information below. Use only facts I provide and do not invent employers, dates, qualifications, responsibilities, achievements, software, metrics or interests. If information is missing, leave it out or mark it as [add detail] rather than guessing. Target role and job advert: [Paste the job title, employer and full job advert] My contact details: [Add the details I want shown] Employment history, newest first: [For each role, add employer, job title, location, dates, responsibilities, tools used, results and achievements] Education and qualifications: [Add qualifications, institutions and dates] Skills: [Add technical, professional and language skills] Other relevant information: [Add certifications, volunteering, projects, publications or interests] Create a concise, professional CV with a clear personal profile, relevant skills and evidence-led bullet points. Tailor it to the target role without copying the job advert or overstating my experience. Keep the tone plain and specific, use UK English, make the structure easy to scan, and put the most relevant evidence first. Do not include a photograph, age, marital status or other personal information unless I explicitly provide and request it. After the CV, list every point that needs my confirmation or more detail.
Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.
Hand it to a person
The distant thirdA person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.
What it gets wrong
- AI cannot recover achievements or responsibilities you fail to mention, so a thin input produces a thin CV.
- AI cannot know which parts of your experience are genuinely strongest without your context about the work and the target employer.
- AI defaults to generic phrases and polished claims that may not sound like you or withstand interview questions.
- AI cannot confirm that an achievement, date or qualification is true, so you must check every factual statement.
Even on a YES, the friction has a name: context depth and taste.
How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.
| Axis | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Output | 2 |
| Inputs | 1 |
| Verification | 2 |
| Liability | 2 |
| Effort delta | 2 |
| Total | 9 / 10 |
The methodology and its thresholds are published in full.
FAQ
- Can ChatGPT write my CV from scratch?
- Yes. It can turn your work history, qualifications and target job advert into a structured UK CV, but it cannot invent the evidence needed to make the CV convincing. Give it facts and check every claim before sending it.
- Is it safe to use AI to write my CV?
- It is reasonable for drafting and restructuring if you provide accurate information and check the result yourself. Do not accept invented achievements, guessed dates or skills you cannot defend in an interview.
- What information does AI need to write my CV?
- Give it your target role and job advert, employment history, dates, responsibilities, achievements, qualifications and relevant skills. If you do not know a detail, leave it out rather than allowing the tool to guess.
- Will recruiters know my CV was written by AI?
- They may notice generic wording, repeated phrases or claims that do not match how you speak about your work. Add specific evidence from your experience and edit the draft into your own plain voice before applying.
