YES

As of 13 August 2026, AI can improve your CV.

Most people should do this themselves; the prompt is on this page.

Can you do it?

5 minutesto a draft.

30 minutesto something you’d act on.

Who has to check ityou

What the alternative costsTeal is an AI job-search workspace for CV tailoring and application tracking.

If this goes wrong: the CV sounds generic or contains an overstated claim, and you lose an application opportunity after sending it.

What to actually do

  1. Do it yourself

    The route this page recommends

A chat interface, chat-fluent skill, and roughly 30 minutes until you can act on the result.

    How to actually do it

    1. Open the job advert and copy the complete text, including the responsibilities, essential criteria and desirable criteria.
    2. Open your current CV and copy its full text into a separate document so you have an unchanged version to compare against.
    3. Gather factual details that are missing or weak, such as dates, qualifications, tools used, responsibilities, achievements and measurable outcomes, and remove anything you cannot defend in an interview.
    4. Paste the job advert, current CV and confirmed additional facts into the prompt, then ask the chatbot to produce the revised CV and its verification list.
    5. Compare every employer, job title, date, qualification, skill and achievement in the draft with your original CV and supporting records, correcting or deleting anything unsupported.
    6. Compare the revised profile and bullet points with the job advert, keeping only relevant evidence and replacing generic wording with your own accurate detail.
    7. Paste the checked CV into a document, confirm the layout is readable when exported as a PDF, and send that version only after checking the employer's application instructions.

    Prompt

Improve my CV for the role below. Use only facts supported by my current CV and the additional facts I provide. Do not invent employers, dates, qualifications, responsibilities, software, achievements, figures or outcomes. Keep the wording plain and specific, remove repetition, and prioritise evidence that matches the job advert. Do not add keywords merely to satisfy an applicant tracking system if they are not supported by my experience. Return: 1. a revised CV in a clean UK format, 2. a short list of changes made, 3. a list of claims or gaps I must verify or fill myself, and 4. three questions that would help strengthen the CV without inventing anything. Keep it to [one or two] pages and use [British English and a formal or plain tone]. Job advert: [PASTE JOB ADVERT] Current CV: [PASTE CV] Additional facts I can confirm: [PASTE FACTS]

Open it prefilled in ChatGPT or Claude, or copy it into Gemini, which takes no prefill link.

  2. Use a tool built for this

    Second choice
  3. Hand it to a person

    The distant third

A person who owns the outcome does this end to end, worth it when the failure is dear.

What it gets wrong

  • AI cannot know which achievement best represents your real strengths unless you provide the context behind it.
  • AI cannot verify that a polished claim accurately reflects your responsibilities, results or level of seniority.
  • AI cannot reliably infer an employer's unstated preferences from a short job advert.
  • AI cannot choose a tone that feels like you without your judgement and final edits.
  • AI cannot make weak experience stronger without genuine evidence from your work.

Even on a YES, the friction has a name: taste, context depth and judgement under ambiguity.

How we scored this

Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT improve my CV?
Yes. It can restructure your CV, sharpen wording and tailor relevant evidence to a particular UK job advert, provided you check every factual claim.
Will AI make my CV better?
It can make the writing clearer and the evidence easier to find. It cannot create missing experience or decide which achievements are genuinely strongest without information and judgement from you.
Can AI tailor my CV to a job description?
Yes. Give it the complete job advert and your current CV, and ask it to prioritise matching evidence without adding unsupported keywords or achievements.
Should I put AI-generated content on my CV?
You can use AI-edited wording, but the final CV must describe your own experience accurately and sound like something you can explain at interview. Delete any claim, skill or result you cannot verify or defend.
