As of 13 August 2026, AI can only partly compare your customer segments with your competitors' segments.
This still needs a person who signs their name to it.

What the alternative costsA market-research consultant is the human alternative, but no price is provided in the available tool data.
If this goes wrong, you may position the product around a competitor segment that was inferred rather than evidenced and spend resources pursuing the wrong opportunity.

How to actually do it
- 1. Open your CRM, customer research and analytics files, then create a short anonymised summary of each current segment with its needs, buying triggers, objections, value and supporting evidence.
- 2. List the competitors you actually want to compare, including their UK websites and the product or market area relevant to your decision.
- 3. Gather public competitor evidence from their websites, pricing pages, case studies, customer stories, reviews and other reliable sources, and record the source and access date for each item.
- 4. Paste the company summary, competitor list and evidence into an AI data-analysis tool, then use the prompt to request a comparison that separates facts, inferences, assumptions and confidence.
- 5. Export or copy the resulting comparison and check every cited competitor claim against its original source, removing claims that the source does not support.
- 6. Compare the proposed overlaps, differences and underserved segments with your own research and commercial knowledge, then label unsupported conclusions as hypotheses rather than findings.
- 7. Send the remaining hypotheses and research questions to the relevant product, sales or research colleague for testing before changing positioning, targeting or product priorities.
Prompt
Compare our customer segments with the segments that can be evidenced for our competitors. Our company and product: [describe the product, market, geography, business model and current positioning] Our customer segments: [paste segment descriptions, customer research, CRM summary, survey results or anonymised data] Competitors: [list competitor names and websites] Competitor evidence: [paste public webpages, pricing pages, case studies, reviews, reports, job adverts, product descriptions or other sources] Business question: [explain the decision this comparison will inform] Produce a table with one row per segment and these columns: segment label, needs or job to be done, likely buying triggers, likely objections, evidence for our company, evidence for each competitor, confidence level, and important gaps. Separate observed facts from reasonable inferences. Do not claim to know a competitor's internal customer segments unless the supplied evidence supports that claim. Cite each external source next to the statement it supports, flag conflicting evidence, and state when a conclusion is only a hypothesis. Then give: 1) the strongest overlaps, 2) meaningful differences, 3) underserved or uncertain segments worth investigating, 4) which findings could affect positioning or product priorities, and 5) five specific questions for customer or competitor research that would test the weakest assumptions. Do not invent figures, customer quotes, market shares or competitor strategy.

What it gets wrong
- AI cannot see competitors' internal customer data, segmentation models, win-loss analysis or strategic intent.
- It turns public marketing language into segment inferences, even when that language reflects positioning rather than the customers a competitor actually serves.
- It cannot decide whether two segments are commercially distinct for your business without your knowledge of margins, sales friction, retention and product constraints.
- It can assemble citations without proving that the sources are representative, current or comparable across competitors.
- It cannot replace interviews, customer observation or a decision about which uncertain segment is worth testing first.

How we scored this
Five axes, each scored nought to two by hand: ten means AI carries the task cleanly, and the thresholds that turn a total into YES, PARTLY or NO are published in the methodology. Each axis name links to its definition.

FAQ
- Can ChatGPT compare my customer segments with my competitors'?
- Partly. It can structure your segment data, analyse public competitor evidence and identify overlaps, differences and hypotheses, but it cannot access competitors' internal customer research or prove that their public positioning reflects their actual customer base.
- What data do I need to compare customer segments?
- Provide anonymised descriptions of your segments, customer needs, buying triggers, objections, value and supporting research. For competitors, gather public evidence such as product pages, pricing, case studies, reviews and customer stories, with the source recorded for each claim.
- Can AI tell me which customer segments my competitors target?
- It can make evidence-based inferences from public material, but it cannot establish a competitor's true internal targeting without direct evidence. Treat the result as a set of hypotheses and test important assumptions with customer research, sales evidence or competitor interviews.
- Is AI competitor segmentation reliable enough to change my strategy?
- Not on its own. Check every cited claim, separate facts from inferences and compare the analysis with your own customer and commercial evidence before changing positioning, targeting or product priorities.
